Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94) No deeper in colour than its stable mates but broader in bouquet, offering a fleshy white fruit. The balance here is impeccable on the palate, with fine acidity behind that supports the generosity of fruit. A good example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93) Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93) The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has a fresh, well-defined bouquet with plenty of energy and open, expressive raspberry and redcurrant aromas. The palate is balanced with a slightly savory opening and hints of black pepper. Whilst not powerful, the finish conveys elegance. More Info

Vinous (89-91) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine has the most floral bouquet of the three tasted from Roy, red fruit commingling with subtle mocha scents and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, again, just a tad savory in style, finishing with a dab of spice. This should drink well for several years, possibly more. More Info

Vinous (89-91) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from 80-year-old vines. Plump red fruit leads the charge on the nose, segueing into an off-dry palate that offers white pepper-dashed strawberry and Morello fruit. Just when I'm getting excited, the finish is a tad drier than anticipated. Hopefully, it will be remedied during its remaining barrel maturation. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an almost clinical bouquet, citrus fresh with commendable purity. Fully de-stemming this was a good decision as it already has sufficient spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of chocolaty oak sticking out. Hopefully, that will be assimilated with time - I will be cautious at the moment, but it should mature well in bottle. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) All the usual suspects make up this wine. 35% whole bunch, 20% new wood, still in barrel. An elegant crimson ruby. The bouquet is light but fine, cherry and alpine strawberry, more density of course than the Bourgogne, very unforced. Not the most intense Gevrey of the vintage, but a fine one. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92) All destemmed, 25% new wood. Rather deeper in colour, ruby purple, with darker fruit on the nose. This has broad shoulders, with some depth to the fruit and more evident tannins, a wine that needs keeping. This one crept above 14% which does give a little heat at the finish. Drink from 2029-2034. Vinous - Neal Martin (87-89) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin En Pallud is 100% whole bunches with no sulfur added until after malo. It has a fine nose and impressive delineation, though it may be missing a bit of complexity at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry. It’s not a deep or powerful wine, a little lactic towards the sweet finish that is just a bit candied for me (maybe a bit of carbonic in the mix?) More Info

Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with mineral-driven citrus fruit and hints of honeysuckle developing in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a sapid entry. A little resinous in texture, there is plenty of extract, underlying the complex, stem ginger and lemon thyme-tinged finish. Give this plenty of bottle age, and there is very good potential. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94) The 2022 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a typical Perrières bouquet with crushed rock/flint percolating through the veneer of slightly tropical fruit. It takes time to settle in the glass. The palate is harmonious with bright acidity, a much more elegant style of Perrières with a creamy finish that lingers in the mouth. That build in the mouth is deeply impressive, although it retains composure and finesse from start to finish. More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, matured in 20% new oak, has quite an engaging bouquet, with hints of wild fennel and mint infusing citrus fruit. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Linear in style, there is no peacock's tail towards the finish, but plenty of spiciness, a touch of Szechuan pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the aftertaste. Recommended. More Info
