Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." "All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93) The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru is habitually one of the Domaine's strongest cards, though this year, it is challenged by the brilliant Caillerets. Still, you cannot deny the nose has excellent mineralité and complexity, with touches of chai and chamomile complementing the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with great power and precision. Wonderful acidity is interwoven into this Chassagne with great precision and persistence on the finish: elegance and class. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, which was more or less ready to be bottled, has an attractive bouquet with lemon curd, crushed stone and light praline scents rendering very seductive aromatics. The 30% new oak is very well integrated. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and tension. Quite edgy, veins of ginger come through on the finish, and there is a conspicuously persistent aftertaste. Very classy. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru was reductive on the nose when I tasted the barrel sample, but that will be addressed by bottling time. There appears to be very good intensity here, and with time, there is an unexpected touch of Shiso leaf. The palate is well-balanced and poised, gently building towards an intense finish, more so than the Chenevottes, with a lingering spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) Clear pale lemon. The bouquet offers a slightly more chiselled note, though still delivering white orchard fruit. Crisp and concentrated on the palate, with a generous build-up of fruit and a long aftertaste. Drink from 2028-2035. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-95) Mid lemon yellow. Power is immediately evident on the nose. Ripe orchard fruit with plenty of flesh on the palate. The oak shows a little more, both vanilla and biscuit, at the moment. So less together, lactic and buttery, but I would tip this to pull its back into balance. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) An attractive racy pale primrose. The bouquet is fully of energy, this is not too heavy a Charmes, but a fine one. The palate offers an excellent weight of fruit, ripe apples, a little fresh plum, very good grip and a long finish. Smart stuff! More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, matured in 20% new oak, has quite an engaging bouquet, with hints of wild fennel and mint infusing citrus fruit. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Linear in style, there is no peacock's tail towards the finish, but plenty of spiciness, a touch of Szechuan pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the aftertaste. Recommended. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91) Fresh clear pale colour. The nose has less character than my favourites in the line-up. Takes a little time, then more emerges. There is something of a steely backbone, this is nicely made but I pine for pinot in this vineyard. Well balanced. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90) A clear pale lemon. A pretty bouquet, more floral, without the sulphur reduction of the Bourgogne Blanc. Clean and even quite chiselled, pure white fruit, just a little heat behind, and some barrel toast. However, the core fruit is very attractive and has some muscle. Fair tension behind.
