Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) Grown in the red soil sector. Their vines in the upper part, on white soil, are still too young to include. Mid crimson red. Plenty of whole bunches on the nose, so I love it, along with the slightly wilder aspect typical of Bonnes Mares. Very complete with a beautiful ripe round dark red fruit suffusing the middle of the palate, and very good acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90) This is from the excellent Pargues vineyard, vinified and aged in stainless steel. Pale colour. The bouquet has a Chablisian crispness but also the juiciness of this 2022 vintage. Crisply concentrated on the palate, this still needs quite a bit more elevage. Which always needs time as shown by the reductive tang. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-97) 60/40 tank/barrel, not assembled yet. A fine bright mid lemon yellow. A nobility of white fruit across the nose, with considerable intensity on the palate, more trenchant acidity perhaps, fairly full bodied and a long gracious finish. By the time this is bottled in January it should be a very fine wine. The aftertaste is already extremely promising. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: June 2023. More Info

Vinous (95-97) The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-96) Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023. More Info

A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Vinous - Neal Martin (90) The 2022 Saint-Aubin Le Remilly 1er Cru comes from a limestone-rich parcel with touches of pineapple and Clementine, the 30% new oak imparting light frangipane notes. The palate is well-balanced, with a slightly tangy entry and fine acidity. It is fresh and vibrant but needs a little more mineralité on the finish. Otherwise, this is a fine En Remilly. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (92) The 2022 Saint-Aubin Murgers des Dents de Chien 1er Cru has a more complex bouquet than the En Remilly this year, demonstrating a touch more mineralité, crushed stone notes infusing the orchard fruit. Its higher elevation perhaps advantages it. The palate is medium-bodied with a nervous entry, very good raciness here that counterbalance the richness of this Saint-Aubin. The finish has very good weight, and the 30% new oak is neatly integrated. Excellent. More Info

The palate is very well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, very saline but with a countervailing, almost honeyed element keeping this on its toes. This is a brilliant follow-up to the 2021. Burghound (89-91) Outstanding Top Value An expressive, fresh and ripe nose freely offers up its aromas of mostly white orchard fruit and floral wisps that possess plenty of classic Chablis typicity. The nicely rich and attractively vibrant middleweight flavors exude a subtle salinity on the clean, dry and sneaky long finish. This is lovely for its level and worth considering. More Info

The palate is where the action is: great concentration and depth, hints of white peach and nectarine, the power loaded at its back end. Give this two or three years in bottle. More Info

Burghound (90-92) Outstanding Top Value Once again there is a smoky character to the cool aromas of shellfish, apple and prominent iodine and quinine nuances. There is excellent complexity to the beautifully textured flavors thanks to the abundant dry extract as the old vines are clearly present on the stony and impressively long finale. Like all of these villages-level wines, this boxes well above its weight and is also warmly recommended. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. More Info
