Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru has a crisp and precise bouquet, very focused with seamlessly integrated oak, crushed limestone and petrichor scents percolating through the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with a slightly honeyed opening. It’s one of the richer cuvées by taste, though analytically, it has very good acidity and 13% alcohol. Fans out wonderfully on the finish. Excellent. In BondSG$640.00 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroye 1er Cru, raised in one-third new oak, has a well-defined bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and light brioche aromas. It will require a couple of years to absorb the wood. The palate is well-balanced with a subtle walnut note on the entry, quite linear in style, with stem ginger veins towards the finish. Impressive length, this should give over a decade's worth of drinking pleasure. In BondSG$580.00 -

Wipe your tears because this is the last vintage of Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru for now; the vines were pulled up after the harvest as production had tumbled to untenable levels, plus there was unacceptable soil erosion. The well-defined bouquet is intense with yellow plum, Mirabelle, crushed stone and wilted white flowers. The palate is very well-balanced with superb tension, focused and energetic with a saline finish. Bowing out in style. In BondSG$1,667.56 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful delineation and poise on the nose, real frisson, with yellow fruit, egg whites and wild peach. Love it! The palate is very well-balanced with a touch of reduction, elegant in style, perhaps needing more depth and grip on the finish. But this is very suave and nuanced. In BondSG$1,667.56 -

There are just two barrels of the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes 1er Cru, the Domaine's smallest cuvée. Ergo, it is raised in 50% new oak. This is relatively primal on the nose, yet to reveal its personality. Yet, there is plenty of concentration here with an underlying sense of tension. The palate is well-balanced, but as expected, it is oaky at the moment, and it will require 4-5 years to subsume that wood fully. I'll be cautious for the moment. In BondSG$580.00 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year.In BondSG$1,667.56 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine.In BondSG$545.00 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is matured in 20% new oak. It has a generous bouquet with orchard fruit, touches of almond and patisserie. It will require a couple of years to absorb the oak. Matured in 20% new oak, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge has quite an intense bouquet with dark cherries, blueberry and light violet scents. Embodying the heights of French viticulture, the Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 is a true gem of superior wine. Clustered in the acclaimed region of Burgundy, this wine captures the characteristic subtlety and depth of Pinot Noir. Taking advantage of the remarkable terroir at Clos Vougeot, its development is carefully overseen by the eponymous Gros siblings, whose family legacy in winemaking has extended over a glorious century.
Firmly rooted on slopes blanketed with limestone clay, their vague pronunciation is an ode to meticulous cultivation, traditional vinification methods, and an enduring respect for nature. Aged in French oak, it offers an ethereal bouquet of cherry and plum interspersed with earthy undertones. On the palate, this wine displays immense structure and complexity, met with a soft elegance and a lasting finish that illustrates the emblem of the 'Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022'. A symphony in a bottle, it unquestionably validates the prestige of Burgundy wines.

(5 Star Wine) 100% new Tronçais wood, for April bottling. A deep central core of purple. Very intense indeed without being clumsy. There is a massive structure here to build on, but it is all about the intensity of the fruit. Deep red not black, almost as thrilling as the 2020 Echezeaux. Waves more fruit come flooding back across the palate, with everything in perfect proportion. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$3,475.00 -

The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. In BondSG$1,490.00 -

A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.In BondSG$2,145.00 -

Includes one third of young vines from Chassagne Caillerets. Pale colour with green tints. The bouquet is all in white fruit, a little softer than the trio of St-Aubins. There is good body behind this, filling the palate with white fruit, and going through to a graceful finish. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$460.00 -

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. Cask sample. Oak shows a little more here in the aroma than on most of the Boisset whites. Mealy and spiced and a touch of vanilla. Really creamy and rounded, so generous and caressing but balanced by great freshness. Embryonically delicious with a long, piercing finish. In BondSG$1,124.00 -
