Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale colour with a lime tint. The bouquet indicates some power but no detail, as yet. Lush white fruit with a slightly honeyed note, continues well across the palate, a little toast and just enough acidity. The aftertaste continues quite well, while showing the riper aspects. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Exquisite in its finesse, the Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 elegantly epitomises the savoir-faire of Burgundy wine-making. Produced in the acclaimed winery of Robert Groffier in Chambolle-Musigny, this Grand Cru contains remarkable subtleties. The vineyard's meticulous progression is underscored by natural and precise harvesting of Pinot Noir grapes, enhanced by indigenous yeasts and spontaneous fermentation. Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 bears the distinct signature of the Groffier estate, combining a unique depth of flavour with an ethereal quality. The structured, aromatic complexity blossoms into notes of red and black fruits, clay minerals, and an intriguing, spicy backbone. The elegant body is matched by an outstanding harmony on the palate, maturing in barrel for 18 months to align power with finesse. This Grand Cru reflects the quintessence of Burgundy's terroir, a noble testament to the passion and expertise of this globally recognised winery. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)(5 Star Wine) One barrel, not new. A pale primrose with a startlingly fine and pure bouquet. Magical. There is a refined yet exceptionally intense pure fruit, with a saline and citrus touch behind. Ultra stylish and very pure. The finish extends beautifully behind. Bravo! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
