Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jean-Michel has a contract to farm an extra five ouvrées of Puligny from the commune for five years. Mid lemon and lime. Fresh and floral, with a good fresh backbone, slight lime blossom. Quite chiselled on the one hand, yet with fair flesh on the other. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$490.00 -

Cask sample. Subtle first impression. Ripe citrus and spice but impressionistic. As it opens, there's a rich creaminess. Rounded and full in the mouth. An unusual combination of gentle intensity. In BondSG$2,715.00 -

Pale lemon in colour. A very stylish nose, more elegance than the Referts, and a little fuller in body than La Garenne. The Champ Canet manages to be both floral and with an ideal ripeness of fruit on the nose, pure white orchard fruit across the palate, and backed by well-judged oak in the usual Jean-Marc Boillot vanilla style. Good clean acidity to finish, properly persistence. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,225.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)
More lemon than lime in the colour. More fruit than flowers in the bouquet. A slightly richer style of wine this year, with just enough tension behind, but these days the site is riper than in the past. There is certainly plenty of wine here. A more muscular Puligny. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$937.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)
Pale in colour, with a particularly attractive nose, discreet but with a fine balance between summer flowers and ripe apples. Not over demonstrative on the palate, but the fruit fills out the palate with complex nuances in the orchard fruit profile, and exceptional length. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,340.00 -

Pale lemon and lime. The 20222 Les Referts has notably more density than the Garenne, a touch of salt on the citrus at the back of the palate, with generous yellow plum fruit in between. Good length. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,135.00 -

Pale colour with a light green tint. A little smoky touch to the bouquet along with a fresh greengage bouquet, good intensity on the palate, a proper backbone, an immaculate Puligny of medium intensity. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$491.00 -

From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$895.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru has more complexity on the nose than the Les Folatières, with cockle shells and muscles complementing the citrus fruit. Fine definition. The palate is well-balanced with greater depth, though I need to see a little more mineralité and tension develop on the finish. As such, I am more prudent with my score. In BondSG$1,850.00 -

Vinous (90-92)
The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, not quite as energetic as usual, though I appreciate the orchard fruit and light waxy aromas. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly pithy entry with lots of extract, leading to a satisfying, lightly spiced finish. Fine.In BondSG$1,590.00 -

Recently stirred so cloudy. Affects the bouquet too, so that is hard to judge. Unquestioned weight, plenty of energy, the lees with the wood shows more at the finish. No reason why this should not be an excellent wine. Another sample was produced, representing the component raised in foudre only, 10 barrels worth, so one third of the whole, has a clear pale lemon and lime colour. The fruit is clearly ripe but with no signs of exotic fruit. This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh and then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, and in 2022 something more. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,106.00 -

Fine mid yellow. The bouquet is beguiling, an attractive but not exaggerated ripeness, the steely backbone one hopes for well covered in fruit, and a fine long finish. Excellent aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$498.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)
The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose, with a mélange of red and blueberry fruit, crushed violet and light iris flower scents. This is going to be very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and layers of mineral-rich red fruit counterbalanced by a perfectly judged line of acidity. It discretely fans out on the finish and feels tender despite the power here.In BondSG$1,991.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,667.56 -
