Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) A fine even purple. The bouquet delivers just a little more intensity, and indeed class. A dark raspberry fruit but fresher than the Chambolle, and the acidity behind is up to the task. There is a fine clean fruit all the way through, the best balanced and most interesting of the Tardy wines. Fine tannins and even a mineral touch to assist the acidity. Drink from 2028-2035. Burghound (89-92) Outstanding top value A very spicy, airy and layered nose freely reveals its aromas of black raspberry, violet, plum and exotic tea. The gorgeously textured and more refined medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality that also seems to add a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finale. This is a lovely Vosne villages and absolutely worth considering. More Info

Jancis Robinson (17+) Mid crimson. Darker-fruited than the Chorey and the Savigny, deep, pure dark fruit and some Nuits spice. Oak seems a little more marked on the nose and also on the palate. Open and surprisingly approachable but needs time for the oak to back off a bit. Long, dark, savoury finish. More Info

Jancis Robinson (17.5) Mid cherry red. Bright red-fruited aroma, more cranberry in its impression of freshness. The stems showing in a light herbal note. Stems adding to the tannins on the palate, too, but they are so polished. Needs more time than some to silkify. Pure and deep with a touch of oak spice and sweetness on the very end. Impressive depth of fruit and great length. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) An attractive mid crimson colour. A fine fresh bouquet, elegant fruit, not too demonstrative, but with a graceful detailed red fruit, alpine strawberry and little raspberry notes. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-93) A fuller purple than either Arlot cuvée, which is as normal. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back. Drink from 2030-2037. Fine tension, medium plus bodied, more strawberry than raspberry, with an even fruit through to the finish, where the fine tannins and light acidity are in balance. Drink from 2029-2036. Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose, with a mélange of red and blueberry fruit, crushed violet and light iris flower scents. This is going to be very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and layers of mineral-rich red fruit counterbalanced by a perfectly judged line of acidity. It discretely fans out on the finish and feels tender despite the power here. More Info

Here the expressive nose blends hints of cassis and red berry liqueur with those of soft spice and newly turned earth. There is a lovely texture to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that also conclude in a firm, mildly warm and serious but not especially rustic or youthfully austere finish More Info

Burghound (90-93) (from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. At the moment, I am finding that the oak is playing too strong a hand, rather dumbing down the fruit which is certainly there. 45% new wood is not in itself excessive, but it makes the fruit darker and heavier.
