Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Not so deep in colour, but quite elegant on the nose. A lighter red fruit profile. Beautifully generous through the middle, perfumed strawberry and raspberry, with a structure built more on acidity than tannin. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (89-92)Outstanding top value A very spicy, airy and layered nose freely reveals its aromas of black raspberry, violet, plum and exotic tea. The gorgeously textured and more refined medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality that also seems to add a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finale. This is a lovely Vosne villages and absolutely worth considering. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Mid cherry red. Less open than the Vosne-Romanée just tasted. Peppery and definitely spiced with a touch of oak and stems all tangled up in the aroma. A dark beauty as it opens in the glass. So elegant, embryonic and yet refined already. Fresh, appears subtle, and it is, but it's also powerful and long. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Mid cherry red. Bright red-fruited aroma, more cranberry in its impression of freshness. The stems showing in a light herbal note. Stems adding to the tannins on the palate, too, but they are so polished. Needs more time than some to silkify. Pure and deep with a touch of oak spice and sweetness on the very end. Impressive depth of fruit and great length. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)An attractive mid crimson colour. A fine fresh bouquet, elegant fruit, not too demonstrative, but with a graceful detailed red fruit, alpine strawberry and little raspberry notes. Very nicely put together, all about the fruit more than the structure. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term agin |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose, with a mélange of red and blueberry fruit, crushed violet and light iris flower scents. This is going to be very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and layers of mineral-rich red fruit counterbalanced by a perfectly judged line of acidity. It discretely fans out on the finish and feels tender despite the power here. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)A full dark purple, again bolstered by the barrel. Dark fruit, which maintains an even presence across the palate. This one does not fade in the middle as some Suchots can do. A fine long balanced finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Medium deep ruby. A restrained nose, quiet juicy dark fruit on the palate, once again plumper than the Sirugue equivalents. Fills the mouth attractively, albeit still with a couple of barrel tannins evident at the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023. |
