Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

5 Star Wine. Fresh bright purple. What a radiant nose, all the heady joy of Vosne, such stylish bright ripe cherry fruit with some mixed red berries behind. Seamless texture and very long. Sheer class. Drink from 2028-2035.In BondSG$750.00 -

A fascinating plot worked by horse and hand, as they cannot get access with the tractor. Super sensual yet with total finesse, a depth of fruit, a feeling of royalty in the quality, a little touch of quality pepper at the finish but it is evidently the vineyard speaking. Still needs to harmonise further, but this is very fine. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$715.00 -

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year.In BondSG$820.00 -

The 2022 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a relatively light but fresh bouquet with slightly darker fruit than other Hautes-Côtes I tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and fine body, given its class, with a confit-like finish. This should be delicious. In BondSG$675.00 -

From half a dozen plots. A bright and attractive fresh purple. Lively cherries and fresh raspberries on the nose. Slightly more solid than I expected on the palate, with still a dry tannin or two, pretty red fruit, medium length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$1,667.56 -

A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$1,667.56 -

Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in orderIn BondSG$1,667.56 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet that completely subsumes the 100% new oak, whilst the 80% whole bunches imparts discrete white pepper and bay leaf notes that enhance the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate is very tensile and focused with finely chiseled tannins and a vibrant, lightly spiced finish with a touch of curry leaf on the aftertaste. Excellent. In BondSG$950.00 -

This year, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunches. The nose is refined and composed - perhaps the most mineral-driven and complex, with fabulous delineation. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, perfectly judged acidity, and silky smooth with a perfectly poised finish. Sophisticated and tensile thanks to the limestone soils, this is a great Chambolle in the making. In BondSG$950.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru comes from vines up to 70 years old. It has a very expressive bouquet with pure black cherry, tayberry fruit, crushed stone, and light forest floor scents. The medium-bodied palate has good concentration with a mixture of red and black fruit. The new oak is a little dominant towards the finish - it's one cuvée where I feel that less would have revealed the elegance that is here. Let's see how this ages and absorbs the oak.In BondSG$815.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuesselottes 1er Cru, which includes 50% whole bunches, has a more backward bouquet with dark berry fruit, clove and light tobacco scents: a little Morey-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and a keen line of acidity, fresh and energetic with a peacock's tail finish. This could well turn out to be Felettig's best cuvée in 2022.In BondSG$950.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru, which had just been racked and includes 50% whole bunches, opens wonderfully on the nose: quite minerally, very graceful, wild strawberry, cranberry and blood orange aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit, fine grip, and a touch of bitter cherry lending to the natural energy of this Les Fuées. Matured entirely in new oak, I must admit that the wood drives the finish a little, but that will be assimilated with time. Great potential. In BondSG$985.00 -

One third each of whole bunches and new wood. A glowing fresh mid purple. Here we find the elegance that was lacking in the Marsannay, plus some oak which is integrating nicely. Good tension, a fresh enough acidity, dark fruit with some violets, and a long distinguished finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$614.00 -

The provenance is Aux Jachées 60%, Chalandins and a smattering of Chaumes 1er Cru, prepared for bottling. 50% whole bunch, 50% new wood. A bright and even purple. The new wood integrates very well, with an impressive depth. This is work in progress that promises very well. A good weight of fruit and a high-class finish that persists properly.
