Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru has a very harmonious bouquet, seductive with slightly richer Morello cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry fruit, just a touch of sous-bois manifesting with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a riper entry than Legros's other cuvées. It has moderate weight, tapering slightly towards the finish when you want it to fan out (like the Bousselots). There’s fine mineralité though I feel it will have more to offer with bottle age. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)A beautifully fresh magenta colour. The bouquet offers lively red berries, with some elegance as well, a little tighter at the finish, but crunchy fruit too comes back. A fine, crisp and attractively perfumed Savigny. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Pinot blanc, filtered but not fined, and ready to bottle. 30% new wood and 13.46% alcohol. This is the first time this wine has hit the yield since he purchased the vineyard in 2006. The palate fills out gorgeously, while there is a fine chiselled fresh finish. Both halves of the equation work. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)A rich deep purple. the nose too is luxurious, with a touch of coconut as well. Totally fills the mouth but there is just a little more precision than the Chorey. The fruit and the coconut make me think of Lamingtons. As long as the coconut dies down this will be pretty impressive. Drink from 2025-2030. Tasted: November 2022. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Give this two or three years in bottle to shave the edges. Very fine. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Still in barrel. An intense deep purple. A little wood alongside the relatively heady fruit. Quite ripe, super succulent, plenty of plums, yet with some mineral tannins at the back which require longer elevage. The tannins are on the firmer side. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a very complex bouquet, a mix of red and black fruit, crushed flowers, and hints of spice coming through with aeration. This seems to "grow" in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins. It’s very pure, so pure that it almost disguises the backbone of this Les Saint-Georges, gaining depth towards the finish with touches of pain d'épice and white pepper. An excellent NSG that will repay cellaring. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)(5 Star Wine) 30% new wood. Fresh mid purple. The bouquet is wonderfully lifted, Antoine explains they use a particularly light hand with this cuvee to avoid the potential austerity. The acidity is fine and the tannins are ripe, while there is still that clear backbone to the fruit which Vaucrains should have. Very persistent, and such high-class fruit. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Racked, and thus fully blended, to be bottled by the end of November. Mid purple, with a perfumed dark red fruit. Vigorous, well-balanced tannins, and good but not trenchant acidity. A fine long finish which remains fresh even though the fruit is clearly ripe. Very persistent. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)Pale lime colour. The bouquet is quite refined, not too much oak showing. There is high quality fresh apple on the palate, maintain the sense of refinement, with a good fruit acid balance in the persistent finish. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023. |

Burghound (91-93)(from a .28 ha parcel). Reduction. The markedly sleeker and more refined middleweight flavors possess a lovely sense of delineation on the dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This is pretty much textbook Damodes that could be enjoyed young or kept for a decade plus. In a word, lovely. |

Burghound (90-93)(from a parcel on the northern end). Firm reduction masks the fruit though there is again a beguiling sense of underlying tension suffusing the detailed and stony medium-bodied flavors that flash good power on the moderately austere and lingering if mildly warm finish that is supported by relatively fine-grained tannins. In contrast to the Damodes that could reasonably be enjoyed young, this compact effort is clearly in need of at least moderate to longer-term cellaring. |

Burghound (91-94)(from a .41 ha parcel). Reduction. The much bigger broad-shouldered flavors also possess outstanding density and power while exuding evident minerality on the precise, firm and very serious finale that delivers excellent length where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is usually the undisputed best wine in the range but in 2022, the Perrières may well give it a run for its money. |

Burghound (91-94)(from a .23 ha parcel). Firm reduction. Here the super-fresh and vibrant medium weight flavors are not as concentrated or powerful but they are notably finer as well as more mineral-driven on the firm, serious and overtly austere finale. This possesses excellent potential but it isn’t a wine for youthful drinking. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a very tempting bouquet, beautifully defined and one of the purest from Grivot this vintage. There's a subtle flinty quality to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure, edgy, thanks to the slightly chalky tannins. It’s a marine-influenced Nuits Saint-Georges with a lingering, quite minerally finish. Exce |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Medium crimson ruby in colour. A very fine perfumed nose, with a blacker note on top of the red fruit, the touch of garrigue for which Roncières is noted, a saline touch also behind the red fruit, with some orange zest. An interesting complex wine with good length. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a fresh and delineated bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, pressed white flowers and truffle. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)A fine even purple. The bouquet delivers just a little more intensity, and indeed class. A dark raspberry fruit but fresher than the Chambolle, and the acidity behind is up to the task. There is a fine clean fruit all the way through, the best balanced and most interesting of the Tardy wines. Fine tannins and even a mineral touch to assist the acidity. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jancis Robinson (17+)Mid crimson. Darker-fruited than the Chorey and the Savigny, deep, pure dark fruit and some Nuits spice. Oak seems a little more marked on the nose and also on the palate. Open and surprisingly approachable but needs time for the oak to back off a bit. Long, dark, savoury finish. |

Burghound (94)Sweet spot Outstanding. This is at once the spiciest and the most floral-suffused nose in the range with its ripe yet ultra-fresh nose of various dark berries, anise and newly turned earth scents. The mouthfeel is also intriguing as it combines excellent density with an appealing sleekness that carries over to the mineral-driven, powerful and compact finale that is wonderfully persistent if very clearly built-to-age. This is almost always Pavelot's best wine and it is highly likely to be so in 2022 as well. |
