Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Delicately sculpted from the prestigious vineyards of Combe d'Orveau in Burgundy, France, 'Anne Gros Chambolle-Musigny Combe d'Orveau 2022' is the epitome of fine winemaking. The vintner, Anne Gros, meticulously oversees the entire process, from hand-harvesting the grapes at peak ripeness to ensuring minimum intervention in the aging process, which takes place in French oak barriques to enhance its multidimensional character. This exquisite red wine offers a harmonious melody of red cherries, wild strawberries and earthy undertones, vibrantly supported by silky tannins and a beautifully balanced acidity. The long, sophisticated finish leaves an indelible impression on the palate, reflected in its exceptional critics' scores. Anne Gros' dedication, paired with her exceptional winemaking prowess, results in a wine of inspiring elegance and complexity. 'Anne Gros Chambolle-Musigny Combe d'Orveau 2022' offers an unparalleled drinking experience that hymns the true class of Burgundy's terroir. |

Burghound (92-94)Sweet spot Outstanding. A slightly more elegant nose combines notes of red cherry and raspberry with discreet touches of earth and discreet wood. The slightly finer and succulent middleweight flavors possess very good verve while exhibiting very fine depth and persistence on the first, dusty, youthfully austere and built-to-age finale. Once again, patience strongly suggested as this should make for a beautiful bottle in time. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-91)Bright ruby in colour. The nose shows a touch of reduction. Nutty and cherries, there is rather good intensity on the palate, a line of intense cherries, no sign of the reduction here. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A little paler in colour, though not racked, with more red fruit, an attractive more savoury note, even fruit spread across the palate, enough acidity to finish with few tannins in sight. Another version was paler at the edges, a richness of fruit at the front of the palate, and a more gravelly texture behind. Crunchy fruit with some grip. This version, aged in amphora, was never sulphured yet vibrant, and will be blended in to the regular version. Scored for the main version. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)There have been biodynamic experiments in Clos St-Landry for 5 years now. Does that add to the precision immediately apparent on the nose? Mid lemon colour. This is very stylish on the palate with excellent length and clean acidity, light mirabelle notes but otherwise more in pure white fruit. A little cream to finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Not racked but has retained purity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A dark purple colour. Quite a ripe fruit which could use the cleaning up of a racking, at which time it will have the sulphur adjusted. Dark ripe cherries on the nose. A wealth of fruit at the front end, some tannins but not astringent behind, a dark strawberry fruit to finish. This has the makings of a very good wine once it has finished its elevage and been cleaned up for bottling. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)The first sample was from a 2018 barrel which marked the wine a little too much. Mid purple. Riper on the nose and has taken the oak a bit more. Try another one. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)An even fuller yellow and an even more luxuriant nose, as Clos des Mouches cannot help. I still haven’t understood just why this vineyard should make such opulent, creamily textured wines. The oak is for me just a little bit too present but it should sort itself out after a light bentonite fining and filtering. Good acidity. Plenty of wine to work with here! Drink from 2029-2036. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A fine bright purple. Concentrated raspberry with a bit of strawberry. There is a more graceful rounded character to the fruit here, a certain succulence into which the oak blends very well. This has a fine sense of harmony and will make an agreeable bottle in the not too distant future. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Chantal Lescure Beaune 1er Cru Les Chouacheux 2022 is an exquisite, finely made wine from Chantal Lescure, a highly esteemed estate nestled in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Produced in Beaune in the heart of Burgundy, this deep ruby-hued pinot noir bursts with riveting layers of spice and brisk fruitiness. The wine comes from the admirable 'Les Chouacheux' vineyard, alluring with mineral-rich soils and a favourable microclimate. The 2022 vintage reveals a harmonious balance of mature tannins and vibrant acidity, the alchemy of biodynamic farming, and scrupulous winemaking methods such as gentle fermentation and prolonged ageing in French oak barrels. While robust and rich, Chantal Lescure Beaune 1er Cru Les Chouacheux 2022 remains elegant, rumination of Burgundy’s terroir in perfect isolation. This divine wine, a testament to the winemaking caliber of Chantal Lescure, with notable ageing potential, is truly an unmissable gem for the discerning oenophile. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Crimson red, a rather sombre nose, lacks life. The oak is currently much too powerful and slightly dries the wine. Burghound (91-93)Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in order |
