Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Step into the realm of fine wine indulgence with the resplendent Michel Magnien Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2022. Michèl Magnien, a fourth-generation Burgundian winemaker, has meticulously cultivated bespoke Pinot Noir vines, nestled in the prestigious Grand Cru terroir of Clos de la Roche. The handpicked grapes, following organic and biodynamic principles, are vinified using indigenous yeast, subtly enhancing the innate characteristics of the fruit. Elevated by 18 months maturation in French oak barrels, the wine portrays a magnificent depth of dark berry flavours, laced with notes of spice, earth, and an enigmatic minerality. This stately full-bodied Burgundian red showcases an admirably firm tannin structure ending in a beautifully prolonged finish, making the Michel Magnien Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2022 an exquisite choice for fine wine connoisseurs seeking a captivating tasting experience. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed. The expressive nose mixes red and black fruit, melted tar and touches of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, lightly spiced with a brisk, black cherry and licorice-tinged finish. Perhaps this has more refinement than the Clos des Chênes. |
