Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is really quite striking, with a floral top note above a wealth of fruit with perfectly judged ripeness. Plenty of energy on the palate, as seems to be the case widely in 2022, with a little yellow plum fruit and ripe citrus to finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Fresh and floral, with a good fresh backbone, slight lime blossom. Quite chiselled on the one hand, yet with fair flesh on the other. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Burghound (91-93) (from a .28 ha parcel). Reduction. The markedly sleeker and more refined middleweight flavors possess a lovely sense of delineation on the dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This is pretty much textbook Damodes that could be enjoyed young or kept for a decade plus. In a word, lovely. More Info

Burghound (90-93) (from a parcel on the northern end). Firm reduction masks the fruit though there is again a beguiling sense of underlying tension suffusing the detailed and stony medium-bodied flavors that flash good power on the moderately austere and lingering if mildly warm finish that is supported by relatively fine-grained tannins. In contrast to the Damodes that could reasonably be enjoyed young, this compact effort is clearly in need of at least moderate to longer-term cellaring. More Info

Burghound (91-94) (from a .41 ha parcel). Reduction. The much bigger broad-shouldered flavors also possess outstanding density and power while exuding evident minerality on the precise, firm and very serious finale that delivers excellent length where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is usually the undisputed best wine in the range but in 2022, the Perrières may well give it a run for its money. More Info

Here the super-fresh and vibrant medium weight flavors are not as concentrated or powerful but they are notably finer as well as more mineral-driven on the firm, serious and overtly austere finale. This possesses excellent potential but it isn’t a wine for youthful drinking. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a very tempting bouquet, beautifully defined and one of the purest from Grivot this vintage. There's a subtle flinty quality to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure, edgy, thanks to the slightly chalky tannins. A very fine perfumed nose, with a blacker note on top of the red fruit, the touch of garrigue for which Roncières is noted, a saline touch also behind the red fruit, with some orange zest. A pleasing mid ripeness to the fruit, this Nuits Lavières is beautifully balanced, with a fine mineral crunch following the solid and persistent raspberry fruit. Fine length. Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a fresh and delineated bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, pressed white flowers and truffle. The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit, fine tannins, nicely focused with impressive tension and mineralité on the finish. It ranks as one of Guillaume Tardy's best cuvées this year. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) A fine even purple. The bouquet delivers just a little more intensity, and indeed class. A dark raspberry fruit but fresher than the Chambolle, and the acidity behind is up to the task. There is a fine clean fruit all the way through, the best balanced and most interesting of the Tardy wines. Fine tannins and even a mineral touch to assist the acidity. Drink from 2028-2035. Jancis Robinson (17+) Mid crimson. Darker-fruited than the Chorey and the Savigny, deep, pure dark fruit and some Nuits spice. Oak seems a little more marked on the nose and also on the palate. Open and surprisingly approachable but needs time for the oak to back off a bit. Long, dark, savoury finish. More Info

The Champ Canet manages to be both floral and with an ideal ripeness of fruit on the nose, pure white orchard fruit across the palate, and backed by well-judged oak in the usual Jean-Marc Boillot vanilla style. A slightly richer style of wine this year, with just enough tension behind, but these days the site is riper than in the past. There is certainly plenty of wine here. A more muscular Puligny. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back. Drink from 2030-2037. Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru has more complexity on the nose than the Les Folatières, with cockle shells and muscles complementing the citrus fruit. Fine definition. The palate is well-balanced with greater depth, though I need to see a little more mineralité and tension develop on the finish. As such, I am more prudent with my score. More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, not quite as energetic as usual, though I appreciate the orchard fruit and light waxy aromas. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly pithy entry with lots of extract, leading to a satisfying, lightly spiced finish. Fine. More Info
