Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)

The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is very ripe and almost ostentatious on the nose with its plush red plum and fresh figgy scents. Maybe just a little over-ripe? The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. This is a "big" Volnay, with plenty of "rondeur" with a welcome pinch of cracked black pepper enlivening the finish. If you're not bothered about elegance, this may suit you, though I might err toward the excellent 2021.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is what you might call the most transparent of Arlaud's Village Cru, with lifted wild strawberry and raspberry fruit and a little more tension and delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a sapid entry, quite tensile with a spicy, quite muscular finish, considering this is a Village Cru.

5 Star Wine. Mid purple in colour. A sublime elegance to the nose, graceful refined yet still full of energy. Floral on top of ripe red berries. Perfectly judged ripeness. There is so much intensity here yet produced with a really fine hand, very persistent indeed, and seemingly effortless. The refined tannins are entirely hidden. Drink from 2032-2040. Aged in single and double barrels for the first year, 15% new wood, then racked to foudre. An even and charming purple. The bouquet is delicious, half southern end (strawberries) half Brochon (richer fruit) together makes a great blend, with excellent energy at the back. And the good news is that there is plenty of it: 16,000 bottles! Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

Two thirds whole bunch and just 12.5% here. A lovely vibrant purple, full of energy. There is a sublime elegance to this on the nose, then a rather earthier dark fruit and a few tannins behind. One can see the suggestion of grand cru in the terroir of Caillerets compared to most other Volnay 1ers Crus. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Fresh mid purple. This also has a fresher quality to the fruit, lively strawberry, I thought of some whole bunches but they were not used. Perhaps not quite the length here of the best in the stable. Mid crimson, attractively perfumed, just a bit sweaty, concentrated raspberry with some strawberry, good acidity. 100% whole bunch gives the style.
