Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

All made in tank. Mid lemon yellow. Exuberant nose suggesting some chardonnay musqué. Almost nutty on the palate, but fortunately also enough acidity. A rotund sort of chardonnay, with character. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-89)

Bourgogne blended from vineyards below Nuits and Chambolle, plus Hautes Côtes de Nuits. 20% whole bunch vinification. A light reduction which makes the nose a touch stinky. Plenty of structure, acid and tannin, with a wealth of savoury red fruit behind. This will turn into a quality Bourgogne. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: November 2023.

La Roche is the last vineyard to be picked on 19th September, the effect of the adjacent forest. Glowing fresh purple. A very clean and juicy fresh red fruit, some redcurrant, plus raspberry, and with good length. Refreshing. Will not take long to come round. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)

Bright pale primrose, with a reductive nose. There’s a very significant weight to the fruit though, with good acidity behind, a little yellow fruit then a cushion of broad-based orchard fruit behind. A punchy, energetic finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

Mid lemon yellow. A faint reduction and a light oxidation, shows the straight from untouched barrel nature of the sample. The oak speaks quiet loudly, then there is good acidity behind, and fine length – but not so easy to see at this moment. However, the exceptional length of the finish indicates that when this settles down it will be a classy wine. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

Mid to full lemon yellow. The bouquet here displays a class and a weight of fruit over and above the others. There is impressive depth through the middle of the palate, then a saline note at the back, as the minerality of the vineyard punches through the undoubted flesh. A good long finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

A fuller yellow and less bright, but not racked or fined yet. The bouquet suggests a bit of freshening up could be in order. That will certainly happen. The fruit in the mouth is quite delicious, with enough concentration, a vigorous apple, just a touch of citrus, and fine length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2023.
