Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." The bouquet is all in white fruit, a little softer than the trio of St-Aubins. There is good body behind this, filling the palate with white fruit, and going through to a graceful finish. Jancis Robinson (17.5) Cask sample. Oak shows a little more here in the aroma than on most of the Boisset whites. Mealy and spiced and a touch of vanilla. Really creamy and rounded, so generous and caressing but balanced by great freshness. Embryonically delicious with a long, piercing finish. More Info

Jancis Robinson (17) Cask sample. Deep-fruited and spicy, citrus and herbs. Finely creamy texture, deep, long and fresh with a slight sour note at the very end that seems to clash a little with the creamy, fruit-sweet aftertaste. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A glowing pale lime colour. Some restrained floral notes, but not demonstrative. On the palate there is a strong line of chalky white fruit, with a discreet intensity, but clearly adequately ripe. Not a wine to drink young as there is so much more to give. Drink from 2028-2035. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Picked between 2nd and 5th September. A very pretty clean lemon and lime. The oak is very well integrated into the classy nose. Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91) Made up from 16 different plots. A pale lemon colour. The nose is undemonstrative but one senses the concentration behind. Indeed, the fruit builds to the back of the palate with a little ripe citrus and correct acidity. Fine length, a little more interest than the very capable Puligny. Drink from 2029-2034. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) Some light green reflections in the primrose yellow colour. A stricter nose, perhaps a touch of sulphur. This may also appear more backward coming after the Charmes. Then a vast wealth of fruit on the palate and now we see the real wine. It maintains the herbal note I associate with Genevrières, alongside golden fruit at a perfect degree of ripeness. The fruit and the acidity weave in and out of each other. I would not want the fruit to be riper but it is full of charm as it stands, and kept in place by the precision of the structure. Very fine. Drink from 2029-2037. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a more airy and floral bouquet than the Embazées, leaning slightly towards Puligny in style. The palate doesn't quite match the promise set by the nose – it is quite weighty and concentrated with an overtly spicy finish. I was expecting more precision here, and I might prefer the previous vintage. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A blend of Abbaye de Morgeot and Francemont. Medium deep yellow. The nose is a little biscuity and a little backward. Then there is surprising weight, largely yellow plum fruit, very good fruit/acid integration, and fair length. This wine does indeed show the power of the Morgeot terroir. Drink from 2030-2038. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93) Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93) The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. More Info
