Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." "All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru has more complexity on the nose than the Les Folatières, with cockle shells and muscles complementing the citrus fruit. Fine definition. The palate is well-balanced with greater depth, though I need to see a little more mineralité and tension develop on the finish. As such, I am more prudent with my score. More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, not quite as energetic as usual, though I appreciate the orchard fruit and light waxy aromas. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly pithy entry with lots of extract, leading to a satisfying, lightly spiced finish. Fine. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term agin More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) Fine mid yellow. The bouquet is beguiling, an attractive but not exaggerated ripeness, the steely backbone one hopes for well covered in fruit, and a fine long finish. Excellent aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) (5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru has quite a strict nose that feels a little overshadowed by the Domaine's outstanding Chassagne at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with an edgy opening, slightly chalky in texture, with light red apple and stem ginger notes appearing towards the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain sports a little reduction on the nose. It’s a little earthy in style, the 40% new oak neatly integrated. The palate is balanced with a pleasant "fatness" on the entry, a little waxy in texture but like the Village Cru, it needs a little more tension on the pithy finish. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92) Mostly Clos de la Jacquelotte but with some more fruit outside the Clos. They used to sell the extra part, but now prefer to keep it. Pale lemon colour, with a pleasing bouquet, not quite the volume of fruit of Garenne on the nose, but more on the palate where fruit rather than flesh drives the wine. Good length, well made.
