Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Not in bottle. Pale colour with a green tint. A lean and lively fruit here, which builds into a white fruit energy, a crisper finish, tightly wound, quite impressive potential. Very millerand, small crop, high skin to juice ratio, which delivers the concentration and the slightly tannic finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$617.00 -

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,702.18 -

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. 5 Star Wine. A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. So subtle yet striking as well Drink from 2032-2040.In BondSG$2,135.00 -

Rich dense purple. Gorgeously attractive if a little more restrained than the Clos St-Denis. Some of the traditional blueberry. So much in reserve. I prefer the weave of the texture here especially if keeping for the longer term. On the cusp of red and black fruit at the finish, and with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040+. Bright purple. This is beautifully elegant, a lovely balance once again. Instead of being plump up at the front, this is all about the intensity at the back. More in strawberry fruit, with medium plus density at the back, but excellent persistence. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$1,125.00 -

Planted in 1953, with tiny berries on the vines. Rich purple, dark berries on the nose, glossy fruit, nearer to raw than super ripe, fine even fruit across the palate, a little touch of acidity, still so youthful. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$920.00 -

From Evocelles, En Songes, and below La Justice. 50% whole bunch vinification, 35% new wood. Fairly deep crimson. The stems do lift the nose, dark strawberry with pepper. Really significant weight behind, far from simple strawberry, with balanced tannins, enough acidity and very good persistence. The concentration hides the wood. Drink from 2029-2035. Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 yearsIn BondSG$1,667.56 -

Faiveley pulled out quite a lot after the frost. There is still plenty left to make this wine, though. Solid red crimson colour, with a delicious red fruit nose with its mineral overlay.
