Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from two parcels (one in Haut Chapelot near Raveneau and the other in Montée de Tonnerre lieu-dit). The strict nose has crushed stone scents, hints of damp moss and sea cave. Very fine delineation. The palate has a penetrating entry with another killer line of acidity. It is tensile and steely with serious weight towards the grippy finish. Very sustained, this is a brilliant Montée de Tonnerre. |

Decanter (93)Appealing already, warm and with a sunny disposition on the palate, there is plenty of driving acidity to balance. Billaud explains that the white clay gives more power. Plenty of tension here. Will age. Not at all overripe. A fine example of Montmains with the vines averaging 35 years old. No barrels. |

Decanter (95)A special bottling from vines more than 90 years old: a vineyard marked by a high proportion of stones and old rootstock. Although it ages as well as Montée de Tonnerre, Billaud's Séchet will finish in a different place. Matured only in stainless steel for 18 months on lees with one racking, it's really very classy and long. A great combination of pear fruit, touch of sunny peach on the palate with abundant minerality to finish. |

Decanter (92)Pretty forceful, direct acidity here. Classic Chablis style. Will age. Comes from two plots situated on the left bank of the Serein, with one positioned below Montée de Tonnerre. They are fermented and kept separate before blending. Mostly hand-harvested. |

Wine Advocate (93-96)A brilliant wine in the making, Dauvissat's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forest unfurls in the glass with youthfully reductive scents of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers, oyster shell and subtle hints of orange blossom. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with superb depth at the core and an electric finish, this cuvée has navigated the vintage's extremes with ease. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Séchet unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp stone fruits, ripe lemons, white flowers, clear honey and subtle hints of warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, cool and satiny, the vintage has lent this a gracious charm that isn't always typical of young Séchet, but the wine's searingly mineral signature remains front and center. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Bright pale primrose, with a reductive nose. There’s a very significant weight to the fruit though, with good acidity behind, a little yellow fruit then a cushion of broad-based orchard fruit behind. A punchy, energetic finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Mid lemon yellow. A faint reduction and a light oxidation, shows the straight from untouched barrel nature of the sample. The oak speaks quiet loudly, then there is good acidity behind, and fine length – but not so easy to see at this moment. However, the exceptional length of the finish indicates that when this settles down it will be a classy wine. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Mid to full lemon yellow. The bouquet here displays a class and a weight of fruit over and above the others. There is impressive depth through the middle of the palate, then a saline note at the back, as the minerality of the vineyard punches through the undoubted flesh. A good long finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)A fuller yellow and less bright, but not racked or fined yet. The bouquet suggests a bit of freshening up could be in order. That will certainly happen. The fruit in the mouth is quite delicious, with enough concentration, a vigorous apple, just a touch of citrus, and fine length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2023. |

Decanter (93)Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Located at the very start of Troesmes, 55 to 60 year old vines. Fine fresh lemon yellow. A clean and elegant fruit forward nose, lighter in style than most 1ers crus, hence its place in the line-up. Youthful bitters again, then a serene follow through, pure and precise. Fine elegant finish. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: June 2023. |

Decanter (95)A stunning example, with finesse allied to power. Real tension and energy here. Will be approachable quite young, but really should be aged for over five years for the best result. Fèvre has 2.24ha within Montée de Tonnerre. Plots are located in Pied d'Aloup (facing east) with profound Kimmeridgian soils bringing freshness, Chapelot facing south on deep soil adding richness, and Côte de Brechain facing west on top of the hill with the oldest plots dating back to 1936. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)(5 Star wine) Clear lemon and lime colour. Just a very light coquillage reduction. Then the wine builds a beautiful level of intensity on the palate, a lime thread, very salivating for its dry finish. An impeccable balance, this is faultless. And so persistent! Nothing heavy, nothing over sunny. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: June 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Mostly in Vaillons itself, with Chatains, Roncières and Mélinots. Another translucent pale lime colour. The nose is a little lighter than Montmains, very fine, lime and lemon notes throughout, it tastes as though filtered through a bed of tiny stones. Graceful and persistent. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: June 2023. |

Decanter (96)Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. |
