Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
30% new wood, including one 400 litre barrel, which is the way Jean-Pierre will go in future for the first year, and then earthenware jars for the second elevage. A touch of liquorice. This has a much denser texture than used to be the case, and a superb fruit acid balance. Extremely impressive for village Morey blanc. A wine which will develop in time. Drink from 2026-2032. A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.In BondSG$2,130.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)
The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb. In BondSG$1,291.00 -

Mid smudgy crimson. Stunningly vibrant aroma of red cherry and peony (winemaker Grégory Patriat suggests violets). I'd be happy to wear this as perfume. Smells intensely sweet but also tart and tangy. All that on the palate, too. Firm, dry texture, layered super-fine tannins are almost chalky. Fabulous wine. If only I could afford to drink it! I am suggesting an early start date for the drinking window because I could actually drink this now though it is sure to have a very long life.In BondSG$2,579.00 -

Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance. In BondSG$2,409.00 -

This cuvée no longer contains Clos des Lambrays young vines. The plot called 30 rangs (planted 2000) was in this wine up to 2021. La Riotte and Le Village remain, the 20 ares of Clos Sorbe has been added to new vineyards (see below) from Domaine Cosson, but instead there is fruit from half a hectare of Les Blanchards, also ex Cosson. Glowing purple. A beautifully lifted bouquet with 40% whole bunches, alpine strawberries, all in finesse. Then the wine builds to an extra level of intensity, more than expected from the elegance of the nose, The fruit shows additional nuances as well, entirely red fruit, some ripe cherries now showing as well. Just a few spices to finish. In BondSG$1,080.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)
Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. Very happy with this! Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,695.00 -

Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Medium deep ruby in colour, with an elegance and style behind, very seductive, with some bright red fruits, alpine strawberry, a fine tensile backbone and very persistent. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$1,125.00 -

25% whole bunch vinification and one new barrel in four. Medium depth of colour with a slightly earthy nose. Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. I will take the elegance of En la Rue de Vergy. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$675.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$675.00 -

Still in barrel, one new barrel in four. A fine lively mid purple with an exquisite bouquet, ethereal hillside Morey lifted further by the whole bunches (80%). An attractive middleweight red fruit across the palate, with some white pepper to finish. Another excellent wine from this super vineyard. Drink from 2029-2036. Burghound (91-94)
(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated styleIn BondSG$1,315.00 -

50% whole bunch vinification, for the southern side planted in 1944, while the 1992 planting is destemmed. Thibault pushes the extraction a little more here. A dense dark concentrated purple. This policy fills out the middle palate more with a dark black fruit but leaves the finish on the dry side with a little torrefaction. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$1,025.00
