Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (89-92)

Outstanding top value A very spicy, airy and layered nose freely reveals its aromas of black raspberry, violet, plum and exotic tea. The gorgeously textured and more refined medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality that also seems to add a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finale. This is a lovely Vosne villages and absolutely worth considering.

Mid smudgy crimson. Stunningly vibrant aroma of red cherry and peony (winemaker Grégory Patriat suggests violets). I'd be happy to wear this as perfume. Smells intensely sweet but also tart and tangy. All that on the palate, too. Firm, dry texture, layered super-fine tannins are almost chalky. Fabulous wine. If only I could afford to drink it! I am suggesting an early start date for the drinking window because I could actually drink this now though it is sure to have a very long life.

Cask sample. Subtle first impression. Ripe citrus and spice but impressionistic. As it opens, there's a rich creaminess. Rounded and full in the mouth. An unusual combination of gentle intensity.

Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Mid cherry red. Bright red-fruited aroma, more cranberry in its impression of freshness. The stems showing in a light herbal note. Stems adding to the tannins on the palate, too, but they are so polished. Needs more time than some to silkify. Pure and deep with a touch of oak spice and sweetness on the very end. Impressive depth of fruit and great length.

From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)

An attractive mid crimson colour. A fine fresh bouquet, elegant fruit, not too demonstrative, but with a graceful detailed red fruit, alpine strawberry and little raspberry notes. Very nicely put together, all about the fruit more than the structure. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.

Recently stirred so cloudy. Affects the bouquet too, so that is hard to judge. Unquestioned weight, plenty of energy, the lees with the wood shows more at the finish. No reason why this should not be an excellent wine. Another sample was produced, representing the component raised in foudre only, 10 barrels worth, so one third of the whole, has a clear pale lemon and lime colour. The fruit is clearly ripe but with no signs of exotic fruit. This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh and then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, and in 2022 something more. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Medium deep ruby in colour, with an elegance and style behind, very seductive, with some bright red fruits, alpine strawberry, a fine tensile backbone and very persistent. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: December 2023.

A full dark purple, again bolstered by the barrel. Dark fruit, which maintains an even presence across the palate. This one does not fade in the middle as some Suchots can do. A fine long balanced finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)

Medium deep ruby. A restrained nose, quiet juicy dark fruit on the palate, once again plumper than the Sirugue equivalents. Fills the mouth attractively, albeit still with a couple of barrel tannins evident at the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023.

Decanter (93)

Pacalet's village Vosne is a delight, with a lovely, forward blackberry fruit expression with hints of violets and earth. The texture is firmly tannic but supple enough to suggest that it will drink well reasonably young and a finish that lingers luminously. The grape sources have evolved a bit – he now cites Au-dessus de la Rivière at the base of the slope and le Barreaux and La Combe Brûlée at the top. The grapes are mainly fermented as whole clusters without sulphur until bottling, and the wine ages two winters in cask, primarily used.
