Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96) The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb. More Info

Burghound (90-91) Outstanding Earthier aromas of plum, violet and anise are trimmed in all but invisible wood. There is fine volume to the rich and velvet-textured middleweight flavors that flash good power on the slightly firmer finale that also displays a touch of rusticity. This built-to-age effort is going to need at least a few years of patience. Like the Fixin, this too is worth checking out. More Info

Jancis Robinson (19) Mid smudgy crimson. Stunningly vibrant aroma of red cherry and peony (winemaker Grégory Patriat suggests violets). I'd be happy to wear this as perfume. Smells intensely sweet but also tart and tangy. All that on the palate, too. Firm, dry texture, layered super-fine tannins are almost chalky. Fabulous wine. If only I could afford to drink it! I am suggesting an early start date for the drinking window because I could actually drink this now though it is sure to have a very long life. More Info

Jancis Robinson (18) Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94) Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from several lieux-dits and includes more whole bunches than previous vintages - 60%. That does dominate the aromatics at the moment and covers some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is lightly spiced, somehow just a little conservative towards the finish, where it needs to muster a little more complexity. But it will drink well for 8-10 years. More Info

Burghound (91-94) (from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. Burghound (90-93) An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long.
