Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru has a refined bouquet with bright red berry fruit, damp loam, white pepper and Earl Grey, the 66% new oak and 65% whole bunches both neatly integrated. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit, a dash of white pepper and sage, gaining depth towards the finish that lingers tenderly in the mouth. Very elegant and stylish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)One new barrel in two, 80% whole bunch vinification. Mid crimson red. Quite a dense bouquet, even a little spicy. Brisk red, raspberry and cherry, with a fine depth of flavour and notable persistence. Some Vosne style headiness with Nuits-St-Georges depth. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |

Burghound (91-94)(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated style |

Burghound (90-93)An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Lovely and very Chambolle in character. |

Burghound (90-93)(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaring |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)The vines were planted in 1962 and 1968. Pale to mid lemon in colour. A light reduction on the nose. The limestone is close to the surface on the nose, a little biscuit note, this is discreet but evidently with a fine tensile strength. Just leave this the time to blossom and it will become a really fine example. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale colour with a lime tint. The bouquet indicates some power but no detail, as yet. Lush white fruit with a slightly honeyed note, continues well across the palate, a little toast and just enough acidity. The aftertaste continues quite well, while showing the riper aspects. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

From the noble Burgundy region comes the exquisite Philippe Pacalet Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022. The Pierre Girardin Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 is a remarkable expression of French wine craftsmanship. Crafted in the heart of Burgundy's prestigious Côte de Beaune sub-region, this sumptuous Chardonnay is the work of Pierre Girardin - a young, meticulous winemaker from a long lineage of vignerons. This Grand Cru's unmatched intensity, elegance, and freshness are a testament to Girardin's skilful hand and the extraordinary terroir of Montrachet. The vineyards, planted on marl and chalk soil, imbue the grapes with distinct minerality and complexity. This exceptional vintage exudes aromas of lemon, honeysuckle, and toasted almonds. On the palate, it offers opulent fruit intensity balanced by refreshing acidity and an enduring chalky finish. The Pierre Girardin Montrachet Grand Cru 2022's incomparable balance, depth and precision make it an unparalleled example of Burgundy's finest Chardonnay. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)(5-Star Wine) 100% of both new wood and whole bunch vinification. The Clos de Bèze sits in its own tank apart from the rest of the wines. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)From five plots. Fresh and quite deep purple. Not much nose at first and then some flowers emerge, including the traditional violets. There are tannins behind, this still needs to resolve, but there is plenty of wine with good acidity behind. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)50% whole bunch vinification, for the southern side planted in 1944, while the 1992 planting is destemmed. Thibault pushes the extraction a little more here. A dense dark concentrated purple. This policy fills out the middle palate more with a dark black fruit but leaves the finish on the dry side with a little torrefaction. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)40% whole bunch vinification. Dense rich purple. The nose is startlingly fine in rich dark raspberry fruit. Les St-Georges was hailed on which seems just to concentrate the wine. A massive wealth of fruit, drier at the back than the super saturated front, but that will come better into focus by the end of the elevage. Very promising. A light coffee note? Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)30% decorticated, all new wood. A glowing imperial purple. What a wealth of fruit is here, how noble in reason. In another league from the other grands crus chez Thibault. I think the finest Richebourg I have seen from him. There is a coconut effect from the wood. The mid palate is particularly intense. An intense red fruit note, then dark raspberry, and the finish is completely swamped by the fruit. Drink from 2035-2045. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)(5 Star Wine) One barrel, not new. A pale primrose with a startlingly fine and pure bouquet. Magical. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Fresh pale green tint. Didier describes this as the entry level grand cru. The average age of the vines is at or above 60 years. There is admirable tension here, an electric start, more middleweight through the middle, then quite a powerful middle with decent dry extract, and good length. Keeps coming back. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023. |
