Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

James Suckling (97-98)Mind-blowingly deep and subtle nose of stone fruit with citrusy nuances. All the density of Batard, but with such elegance at the extremely long, focused finish. Great potential! From old vines purchased in 2008. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a mineral-driven, obdurate nose that you might presume derives from a cooler growing season. Subtle petrichor/wet pavement aromas intermix with sea spray. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely creamy texture, vanilla mixed with orange rind and tangerine. There’s fine depth, though I prefer the precision of the VIrondot and Caillerets. However, it will surely mature beautifully in bottle. |

Immerse yourself in the opulence that is the Pierre Girardin Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022, a remarkable embodiment of world-class Burgundian winemaking. Crafted amidst the verdant slopes of Batard-Montrachet, its pedigree emanates from the esteemed Girardin family known for producing distinctive and terroir-focused wines for over thirteen generations. The meticulous winemaking journey of Pierre Girardin Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 comes to fruition through traditional and sustainable vineyard practices, hand-harvesting, and low-intervention cellar processes. This wine unites the luxurious power of Batard with thrilling poise and energy. The lavish layers of ripe green apples, pear, and honey intertwine with an entrancing mineral undertow, reflecting the distinct limestone-clay soils of the grand cru vineyard. On the palate, it is impeccably structured with a lingering, resinous finish. A true testament to the unparalleled finesse and intensity of Pierre Girardin's craft, making it an extraordinary addition to any fine wine collection. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)A full mid yellow, much deeper than the Bienvenues. This has all the power, and with finesse too though evidently not as much as the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bâtard has just back from the rugby field. A good example though. 4 barrels made, of which one new. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
