Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year. More Info

Vinous (94-96) The 2022 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a terse, stony bouquet with touches of granite, orange pith and grilled walnut aromas that gradually gather momentum in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced, with a reductive note lending tension and poise. Surfeit with energy, this fans out wonderfully and is one of the longest in the mouth. Due to be bottled next spring, this is a magnificent Criots. More Info

Vinous (95-97) The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is the only cuvée in two one-year-old barrels. I don't think it needs new oak. There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) Mostly Aloxe with a touch of Pernand. Quite a full lemon yellow. The bouquet offers a balanced ripeness, with flinty notes more than opulent fruit. This Corton-Charlemagne shows very lively, white fruit, a little citrus, river bed minerals behind, and excellent persistence. Lots of crunch to finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Meursault Clos Richemont 1er Cru is a dense, opulent white built on texture more than anything else. It is one of the most overt wines in the Boillot range. Orange jam, spice, vanillin, lemon confit and baked apple tart infuse the 2022 with tons of textural intensity. This is such a distinctive wine. More Info

Vinous (94-96) The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) 1.5 barrels. Fullish yellow with ripe fruit, a touch of bacon fat along with Jerusalem artichokes. As well as the beautiful quality of fruit there is a saline touch. Certainly complex, not monstrously massive, showing more today than the Bâtard but there is correspondingly even more to come. Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is bright, tense and nicely focused. Lemon peel, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper lend notable energy to this wonderfully vibrant, sculpted Puligny. All the elements are so well balanced. Saline notes emerge in the glass, supporting the beautifully persistent finish nicely. This is so attractive. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) 5 Star Wine. Mid yellow, with a biscuity touch. Seems unsubtle until you get to the palate which is super powerful but also with subtlety. This Monopole vineyard comprises four distinct terroirs though they are always assembled. An electric backbone stops the power overturning the balance. Yellow fruit, and then an extraordinary, indeed grand cru, weight. Incisive white fruit finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. More Info

Little white fruits and flowers, perfectly nuanced, very slightly richer at the back and extraordinarily long on the palate. Perfect fruit acid matching all the way through. Drink from 2030-2038. The opulence of the vineyard shows in a controlled manner on the palate. A little oak shows but it is classy. As with Chartron’s other wines, there is a complementary acidity which helps the balance. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) A full primrose yellow. The bouquet is sturdier here, surprisingly, after the pure white fruit Bâtard. However, the chiselled elegance of Chevalier shows much more on the palate, where there is an impressive, if initially restrained, intensity and a second wave of flavour further back on the palate. This will be particularly fine and the aftertaste is notably persistent. A very long finish indeed. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98) Still on its fine lees. A fine fresh very pale primrose colour. Super discreet nose, just offering some light floral notes at first, but you know there is so much more to come. It is not over exuberant but the fruit comes across the palate in little wavelets, perfectly balanced acidity, the oak subsumed into the intensity of the fruit. The 2022 Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet bows out with a wonderfully long and fine finish. Drink from 2034-2045. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) Recently stirred so cloudy. Affects the bouquet too, so that is hard to judge. Unquestioned weight, plenty of energy, the lees with the wood shows more at the finish. No reason why this should not be an excellent wine. Another sample was produced, representing the component raised in foudre only, 10 barrels worth, so one third of the whole, has a clear pale lemon and lime colour. The fruit is clearly ripe but with no signs of exotic fruit. This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh and then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, and in 2022 something more. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a more airy and floral bouquet than the Embazées, leaning slightly towards Puligny in style. The palate doesn't quite match the promise set by the nose – it is quite weighty and concentrated with an overtly spicy finish. I was expecting more precision here, and I might prefer the previous vintage. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A blend of Abbaye de Morgeot and Francemont. Medium deep yellow. The nose is a little biscuity and a little backward. Then there is surprising weight, largely yellow plum fruit, very good fruit/acid integration, and fair length. This wine does indeed show the power of the Morgeot terroir. Drink from 2030-2038.
