Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Pale lemon yellow. Attractive juicy fruit on the nose. Quite a graceful approach, backed by more than adequate density of fruit, lemon scented ripe apples, good length. Classy Bourgogne Blanc from a particularly good site. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$211.00 -

Not in bottle. Pale colour with a green tint. A lean and lively fruit here, which builds into a white fruit energy, a crisper finish, tightly wound, quite impressive potential. Very millerand, small crop, high skin to juice ratio, which delivers the concentration and the slightly tannic finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$617.00 -

In bottle. Pale lemon and lime, with a fine stylish bouquet, very classy, not phenolic, yet delivers good flavour on the palate, a lime note at the back, and balanced acidity. Textbook Aligoté. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$159.00 -

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$617.00 -

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. Not in bottle. Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet leaps out of the glass, with an intensity of fruit taken at perfect ripeness. Excellent energy through the middle, racy and still fine. The Enseignères leaves a beautifully balanced aftertaste. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$609.00 -

60/40 tank/barrel, not assembled yet. A fine bright mid lemon yellow. A nobility of white fruit across the nose, with considerable intensity on the palate, more trenchant acidity perhaps, fairly full bodied and a long gracious finish. By the time this is bottled in January it should be a very fine wine. The aftertaste is already extremely promising. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: June 2023.In BondSG$510.00 -

Vinous (95-97)
The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated. In BondSG$510.00 -

Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In BondSG$510.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)
The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté was picked two weeks after the main harvest and racked just before the 2023 picking. It has quite a primal bouquet with grapefruit and Conference pear, gaining delineation in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely sense of "rondeur," slightly lower in acidity than last year but with commendable purity on the finish. Lovely. In BondSG$243.00 -

Bottled end October. Fine pale lemon colour with a definite green tint. Tense powerful crisp fruit, the crunchy side of orchard fruit, then builds in richness to the back, before rediscovering its minerality to finish. Notably persistent, I can see the point in Musigny Blanc more easily than I used to! Drink from 2030-2040.In BondSG$4,305.00 -

Mid lemon yellow. A mix of engaging ripe fruit and some reduction. Complex, but also tightly wound, a tannic structure behind. It isn’t singing at this stage of its life, but I don’t doubt the qualities, so this should reach the upper end of the range. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,667.56 -

A fine mid lemon yellow. The bouquet is extremely stylish, showing a Chevalier with depth of flavour. There is lots more to tease out. Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040.
