Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Tressage here, no tractor for years so as to avoid compacting the very light soil. One barrel, magnums only. Mid ruby with clearly a riper more perfumed style of fruit. Even a slight plum note to the perfume, then stonier and more saline on the palate. The fruit leaves a sweet impression in the mouth. Super fruit concentration behind. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

Burghound (92-94)

Sweet spot Outstanding. A slightly more elegant nose combines notes of red cherry and raspberry with discreet touches of earth and discreet wood. The slightly finer and succulent middleweight flavors possess very good verve while exhibiting very fine depth and persistence on the first, dusty, youthfully austere and built-to-age finale. Once again, patience strongly suggested as this should make for a beautiful bottle in time.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-91)

Bright ruby in colour. The nose shows a touch of reduction. Nutty and cherries, there is rather good intensity on the palate, a line of intense cherries, no sign of the reduction here. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, one of the last to be picked over three different passes, has a plush and expressive bouquet with dark cherries, raspberry coulis and light violet petal aromas that recede and reveal orange rind and yuzu scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip on the entry. It’s a solid Charmes-Chambertin that is Mazoyères in style because, well, that's where it's from! A serious Charmes-Chambertin that will age well in bottle.

5 Star Wine. A glowing mid crimson purple. The bouquet is enchanting with the white pepper and rose petal lift from the whole bunches, a little under half. Perfectly judged ripeness. The wine is beautifully discreet on the palate, but it is all there. Not super concentrated but detailed, precise and entirely in balance. Note: one of the ways in which Cyprien ensures a first class result with his Clos de la Roche is by marking up underperforming vines and deselecting their fruit at the picking stage. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

5 Star Wine. Mid purple in colour. A sublime elegance to the nose, graceful refined yet still full of energy. Floral on top of ripe red berries. Perfectly judged ripeness. There is so much intensity here yet produced with a really fine hand, very persistent indeed, and seemingly effortless. The refined tannins are entirely hidden. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

Burghound (91-94)

A discreet application of wood sets off the softly spicy and earthy aromas of violet, lavender plum and red currant. The powerful and markedly more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors exude a subtle minerality on the succulent yet very firmly structured finale that exhibits excellent length. Patience will be necessary but it should be well-rewarded in time as this is packed with development potential.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru has a classic Morey-Saint-Denis bouquet with mineral-driven black fruit and touches of melted tar and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-balanced and grippy, with perhaps the most saline finish amongst Arlaud's Morey Premier Crus. This will need more time than the Aux Chesaux, but it will be worth the wait.

A pretty mid ruby colour. Fresh raspberry, very sensual up front, firmer tannins behind, but the fruit covers them nicely. Linear in style, good acidity, and with a more complex crunch to the fruit at the back. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023.

Mid purple, with a reductive nose, having not yet been racked. It resides in a single new 456 litre barrel whence a slight bacon fat reduction. The intensity of fruit explodes on the palate behind the wood, this will come round with longer elevage. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Aged in single and double barrels for the first year, 15% new wood, then racked to foudre. An even and charming purple. The bouquet is delicious, half southern end (strawberries) half Brochon (richer fruit) together makes a great blend, with excellent energy at the back. And the good news is that there is plenty of it: 16,000 bottles! Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

From Les Tuyaux, Herbues, Fleurières, all destemmed. Pretty mid purple. This is more in red fruit than black, with good body and excellent length. A very nice example reflecting its mostly northern Nuits provenance. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.

Mid purple, the Vergelesses has the elegance which the Haut Jarrons perhaps lacks, fine grained tannins, a bit firmer at the finish, but the red berry fruit continues on behind. 13.3% Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.

Two thirds whole bunch and just 12.5% here. A lovely vibrant purple, full of energy. There is a sublime elegance to this on the nose, then a rather earthier dark fruit and a few tannins behind. One can see the suggestion of grand cru in the terroir of Caillerets compared to most other Volnay 1ers Crus. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Fresh mid purple. This also has a fresher quality to the fruit, lively strawberry, I thought of some whole bunches but they were not used. Perhaps not quite the length here of the best in the stable. A little austerity at the back within the context of this vintage. 13.2% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2022 Fixin En Combe Roy contains 50% stems, which loom over the current aromatics: dark berry fruit, cola, cracked black pepper and a faint wild fennel aroma. Very complex. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and gentle grip. More tertiary in style, a little "gawkier" (if you can call an unfinished wine that), that it will certainly cohere during its élevage. It will require 3-4 years in bottle, but this is another very promising Fixin.
