Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Wine Advocate (97-99)My allegiance chez Dugat is almost always to the Griotte-Chambertin, but this year, it was the 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru that dominated in our tasting. Soaring from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of sweet berries, cherries and plums mingled with licorice and smoke, it's full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with a deep core of rich, vibrant, concentrated fruit framed by beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97)In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)In bottle since end October. Mostly from Les Porlottes, which is higher and cooler and the last to be picked, plus also the small holdings of 1ers crus Baudes and Fuées. A glowing purple with quite a dark centre. Fully ripe but not unduly heady dark raspberry fruit, with a fine concentration of fruit. Dark notes include bilberries but also an excellent mineral freshness. Fine length, a very fine example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Decanter (98)A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)From the upper part of Les Treux. Glowing purple. The nose is discreet. The palate does the Echezeaux latticework thing with lots of detail, and exceptional length. Goes on dancing, tiptoeing, across the palate for a long time. Just one barrel. The fruit stays with me. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Rich dense purple. Gorgeously attractive if a little more restrained than the Clos St-Denis. Some of the traditional blueberry. So much in reserve. I prefer the weave of the texture here especially if keeping for the longer term. On the cusp of red and black fruit at the finish, and with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is one of Dujac's strongest cards, and in this vintage, there's no change there. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich red fruit, subtle iris flower scents and a hint of sous-bois. It has more energy than an over-excited puppy. The palate is medium-bodied with a well-knit opening, harmonious with white pepper and clove-infused black fruit. It has fine backbone, precise and edgy on the finish that lingers long in the mouth. Excellent. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a clean and precise bouquet, more low-key and understated than the Les Beaux Monts, the fruit profile leaning more towards the red side of the fruit spectrum. The stem addition is barely recognizable. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Sapid and refined, it gently builds in the mouth towards a tensile, focused finish. This beautiful Malconsorts will age beautifully over 20 to 25 years and more. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)A deep and vibrant ruby purple. This also has the seductive quality one wants but definitely is more precise, more subtle. There is a special backbone to this wine which makes it complete rather than just superficially attractive. This Charmes-Chambertin has a definite mineral finish. Drink from 2031-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Decanter (95)Duroché has two cuvées of Lavaut; Pierre takes enough of the oldest vines (planted in 1923) to cull out a single barrel for a 'Vieilles Vignes' cuvée. If you can't find that, this wine will do nicely with its dark blackberry fruit and floral notes, silky texture, refreshingly crisp freshness, and tannic grip. This delicious wine should show well shortly after release but can undoubtedly be cellared for a decade or more if you can avoid drinking it now. |

Burghound (94-97)(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. This is also terrific |

Burghound (91-93)Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Faiveley pulled out quite a lot after the frost. There is still plenty left to make this wine, though. Solid red crimson colour, with a delicious red fruit nose with its mineral overlay. Alpine strawberries, fair concentration, very detailed, maybe just needs to kick on more at the finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |
