Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru absolutely delivers on the nose from the very first sniff: complex mineral-driven red berry fruit, exquisitely defined, takes it up another level from the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. The palate is beautifully balanced with finely chiseled tannins. Poised yet powerful, it fans effortlessly toward the immensely detailed and beguiling finish. Jadot has stepped up a gear in terms of its Clos Saint-Jacques in recent vintages (for example, the 2019), and this will give the likes of Rousseau and Clair a run for their money. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) Quite pale in colour, not abnormal for Estournelles. The bouquet is quite delicate but the fruit in the mouth is properly refined. This is a wine that creeps up on you rather than impresses at first sight. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Musigny Grand Cru does not hold back with a multi-layered nose of wild strawberry, raspberry, forest floor, pain d'épice and a light ash-like scent. Very absorbing and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins. Impressive depth and grip, as you would expect from a Musigny, with a touch of white pepper and orange rind towards the finish. Very long. It will require 8 to 10 years in bottle, but it's certainly worth the wait. More Info

A beautiful bouquet, with a headiness brought by the whole bunches. Dark red fruit with floral overtones. The stems give some white pepper as well, an there is a fine elegant finish. Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an almost clinical bouquet, citrus fresh with commendable purity. Fully de-stemming this was a good decision as it already has sufficient spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of chocolaty oak sticking out. Hopefully, that will be assimilated with time - I will be cautious at the moment, but it should mature well in bottle. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99) 45% whole bunch vinification, 7 new out of 9 barrels. A fine red to crimson colour. The nose is less flamboyant than the Mazoyères yet with serious intent. This is solid with an iron rich blood orange tang, then a dark strawberry fruit behind, a firmer backbone – showing clearly how well this wine will age. Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru has a refined bouquet with bright red berry fruit, damp loam, white pepper and Earl Grey, the 66% new oak and 65% whole bunches both neatly integrated. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit, a dash of white pepper and sage, gaining depth towards the finish that lingers tenderly in the mouth. Very elegant and stylish. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. More Info

Burghound (91-94) (from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. Burghound (90-93) An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Burghound (90-93) (from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Les St-Georges was hailed on which seems just to concentrate the wine. A massive wealth of fruit, drier at the back than the super saturated front, but that will come better into focus by the end of the elevage. Very promising. A light coffee note? Drink from 2032-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99) 30% decorticated, all new wood. A glowing imperial purple. What a wealth of fruit is here, how noble in reason. In another league from the other grands crus chez Thibault. I think the finest Richebourg I have seen from him. There is a coconut effect from the wood. The mid palate is particularly intense. An intense red fruit note, then dark raspberry, and the finish is completely swamped by the fruit. Drink from 2035-2045. Tasted: November 2023. More Info
