Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

There are just two barrels of the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes 1er Cru, the Domaine's smallest cuvée. Ergo, it is raised in 50% new oak. This is relatively primal on the nose, yet to reveal its personality. Yet, there is plenty of concentration here with an underlying sense of tension. The palate is well-balanced, but as expected, it is oaky at the moment, and it will require 4-5 years to subsume that wood fully. I'll be cautious for the moment.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine.

This distinguished wine was meticulously crafted in Chambolle-Musigny, a renowned village in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, France. Commonly characterised by a harmonious balance of strength and finesse, the Francois Bertheau lineage persists in maintaining their 150-year-old tradition of unfiltered bottling that eloquently encapsulates the terroir's persona.

This Pinot Noir's captivating elegance expresses a bouquet of wild strawberries, offset by earthly undertones and delicate spice notes, manifesting a multilayered complexity. The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru, which had been bottled and comes from a single parcel of 70-year-old vines, has an attractive bouquet with cranberries, raspberries, touches of black olive and marine scents, with hints of white flower emerging with time. The palate is sweet and quite candied on the entry, fleshy but with a fine structure that segues into a spicy, white pepper-tinged finish. Like a mini-Bonnes Mares!

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with more floral tones than the Les Millandes, wilted violets infusing the black and red fruit, fine mineralité coming from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh and saline, with a cohesive, very "controlled" finish that lends this wine verticality. Very sapid. Give this 3-4 years in bottle.

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is a tiny production matured each year in a single, tailor-made "Aphrodite" barrel from the Cavin cooperage. This vintage is just 400 liters. Because of the very light toasting, the new oak does not impede the aromatics: brambly red berry fruit and fish scale touches. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet and slightly candied opening, offering blood orange-laced fleshy red fruit, with vanilla towards the finish. It is very seductive, and despite the new oak, the structure suggests this will be more approachable than Legros's other cuvées.

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from two parcels, one planted north-south and the other east-west. Its attractive bouquet offers brambly red berry fruit, forest floor and light black truffle scents. There is good complexity here; it is very composed. The palate is well-balanced, with good depth and gentle grip. There is mainly black fruit here with plenty of freshness and mineralité. The finish has commendable precision and feels long and tender. Excellent.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru, which has just been bottled, has a feisty bouquet with macerated red cherries, black currant and light violet aromas borrowed from over the boundary in Vosne-Romanée. The well-balanced palate has a sorbet-like freshness, candied orange peel interwoven through the mainly black fruit, and a spicy/black pepper-tinged finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle - it is an excellent NSG that may improve with bottle age.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Bousselots 1er Cru comes from a parcel located slightly lower down the incline than the Aux Thorey, the vines around 50 years old. It has a well-defined and more composed bouquet with vivacious redcurrant, wild strawberry, and blood orange scents, very focused and energetic. The medium-bodied palate has fine tannins, very precise and pure, with good tension and complexity, and a mineral-rich, complex finish. This may be the best Nuit Saint-Georges I have tasted from Legros. Highly recommended.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru has a very harmonious bouquet, seductive with slightly richer Morello cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry fruit, just a touch of sous-bois manifesting with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a riper entry than Legros's other cuvées. It has moderate weight, tapering slightly towards the finish when you want it to fan out (like the Bousselots). There’s fine mineralité though I feel it will have more to offer with bottle age.

The 2022 Saint-Aubin Le Remilly 1er Cru comes from a limestone-rich parcel with touches of pineapple and Clementine, the 30% new oak imparting light frangipane notes. The palate is well-balanced, with a slightly tangy entry and fine acidity. It is fresh and vibrant but needs a little more mineralité on the finish. Otherwise, this is a fine En Remilly.

The 2022 Saint-Aubin Murgers des Dents de Chien 1er Cru has a more complex bouquet than the En Remilly this year, demonstrating a touch more mineralité, crushed stone notes infusing the orchard fruit. Its higher elevation perhaps advantages it. The palate is medium-bodied with a nervous entry, very good raciness here that counterbalance the richness of this Saint-Aubin. The finish has very good weight, and the 30% new oak is neatly integrated. Excellent.

The 2022 Vougeot Les Cras 1er Cru comes from a parcel next to Château de la Tour, planted next to Chardonnay from Domaine de la Vougeraie. It has a potent marine/estuarine-scented bouquet with mainly red berry fruit and hints of morels and crushed stone. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit, very smooth in style, although, like in previous years, I discern more complexity on Legros's Chambolle and Morey-Saint-Denis cuvées. Fine.

A beautifully fresh magenta colour. The bouquet offers lively red berries, with some elegance as well, a little tighter at the finish, but crunchy fruit too comes back. A fine, crisp and attractively perfumed Savigny. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru is pure and sensual: black cherries, raspberry and light bay leaf scents, almost pastille-like in style with beautifully integrated oak. A light ruby purple. The bouquet is immediate and very seductive, doing its Charmes thing. Roses and red fruit, especially strawberry. Fills the mouth seductively, continuing through to a fine finish, not too much acidity, refined tannins, very agreeable. And excellent persistence. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

This is also aromatically really fresh with its blend of dark raspberry, violet and a crushed fennel aromas. The mouthfeel of the slightly richer flavors is also caressing but here there is a subtle minerality on the lacy, balanced and youthfully austere finale that delivers slightly better persistence. Textbook Chatelots.

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru bides its time unfolding in the glass, eventually revealing earthy red fruit, clove and hints of bergamot. This is very complex, but it is not a flashy Chambolle. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It has crisp acidity and is nicely structured with one of the most sapid finishes from the Domaine. This is one of their finest offerings in this vintage.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a spicy bouquet that takes time to cohere in the glass. Dark cherries, pain d'épice and dried flowers unfold in the glass. The palate is perhaps the most marine-influenced of the cuvées. Rather foursquare perhaps: it's tightly wound and slightly conservative towards the finish, yet feels long in the mouth. Very fine…but you must be patient.
