Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Beaune Teurons 1er Cru is fully de-stemmed for the first time. This leans more towards red fruit on the nose, though maybe because of the lack of stems, it doesn't quite have the personality or freshness as the Tuvilains. The palate is well-balanced with lively red fruit and good depth, and the 35% new oak neatly integrated with fine depth on the finish. I feel it will improve with time in bottle. In BondSG$597.00 -

Another vineyard worked by horse. 40% whole bunch, still in barrel, 75% new wood. Mid crimson purple. A beautiful bouquet, with a headiness brought by the whole bunches. Dark red fruit with floral overtones. The stems give some white pepper as well, an there is a fine elegant finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$505.00 -

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an almost clinical bouquet, citrus fresh with commendable purity. Fully de-stemming this was a good decision as it already has sufficient spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of chocolaty oak sticking out. Hopefully, that will be assimilated with time - I will be cautious at the moment, but it should mature well in bottle. In BondSG$650.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain sports a little reduction on the nose. It’s a little earthy in style, the 40% new oak neatly integrated. The palate is balanced with a pleasant "fatness" on the entry, a little waxy in texture but like the Village Cru, it needs a little more tension on the pithy finish. In BondSG$990.00 -

All destemmed, and now racked to tank, after 25% new wood. A fine bright crimson purple, with lifted fruit, showing both energy and balance. I like Savigny in 2022. Typical briary red fruit with well-integrated tannins. Fair length. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$528.00 -

This vineyard is worked by horse. 20% whole bunch vinification, 30% new wood. Dark purple with a little reduction. There is fine potential here too, in a liquid dark raspberry style, long on the palate, some sun dried cherries, but without the alcohol and excess of 2020. Good wine. Drink from 2029-2036. Still in barrel. A gorgeous lemon and lime colour with a striking bouquet, the herbal side is fully there, plus an intensity which never oversteps the mark. Body and class together. Weighty and enticing at the same time. Very well done. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$1,160.00 -

25% whole bunch vinification and one new barrel in four. Medium depth of colour with a slightly earthy nose. Quite a solid 1er Cru with the more savoury style of Morey, but not quite convincing. I will take the elegance of En la Rue de Vergy. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$675.00 -

60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.In BondSG$675.00 -

One new barrel in two, 80% whole bunch vinification. Mid crimson red. Quite a dense bouquet, even a little spicy. Brisk red, raspberry and cherry, with a fine depth of flavour and notable persistence. Some Vosne style headiness with Nuits-St-Georges depth. Drink from 2030-2038. A solid dense ruby colour with a powerful bouquet driven by both the intensity of the fruit and the new oak, one barrel of the two, and no stems. There is a lot of wine here in its solid earthy Pommard style, yet with class too. Excellent length, and so much fruit that it can eat up its oak easily. Drink from 2032-2040.
