Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Cask sample. Oak shows a little more here in the aroma than on most of the Boisset whites. Mealy and spiced and a touch of vanilla. Really creamy and rounded, so generous and caressing but balanced by great freshness. Embryonically delicious with a long, piercing finish. In BondSG$1,124.00 -

Jancis Robinson (17)
Cask sample. Deep-fruited and spicy, citrus and herbs. Finely creamy texture, deep, long and fresh with a slight sour note at the very end that seems to clash a little with the creamy, fruit-sweet aftertaste. In BondSG$1,124.00 -

Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Mid cherry red. Seductive, sweet-floral, perfumed. Open and expressive. Then deeper and more savoury on the palate. Super-fine tannins with lots of layers so that overall they are slightly chewy. Multilayerd, deeply fruited and very long. A harmonious beauty. In BondSG$664.00 -

Jancis Robinson (16.5)
Cask sample. A hint of vanilla over ripe lemons as well as a suggestion of stone dust. Creamy texture, mealy, rounded, sour-fresh finish. In BondSG$366.00 -

Jancis Robinson (17)
Cask sample. A touch smoky on the nose. Invitingly stony/mineral aroma. Then this unexpectedly creamy rounded texture and still excellent freshness with a lightly sour aftertaste increasing the freshness. In BondSG$486.00 -

Pale lemon in colour. A very stylish nose, more elegance than the Referts, and a little fuller in body than La Garenne. The Champ Canet manages to be both floral and with an ideal ripeness of fruit on the nose, pure white orchard fruit across the palate, and backed by well-judged oak in the usual Jean-Marc Boillot vanilla style. Good clean acidity to finish, properly persistence. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,225.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)
More lemon than lime in the colour. More fruit than flowers in the bouquet. A slightly richer style of wine this year, with just enough tension behind, but these days the site is riper than in the past. There is certainly plenty of wine here. A more muscular Puligny. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$937.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)
Pale in colour, with a particularly attractive nose, discreet but with a fine balance between summer flowers and ripe apples. Not over demonstrative on the palate, but the fruit fills out the palate with complex nuances in the orchard fruit profile, and exceptional length. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,340.00 -

Pale lemon and lime. The 20222 Les Referts has notably more density than the Garenne, a touch of salt on the citrus at the back of the palate, with generous yellow plum fruit in between. Good length. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,120.00 -
Immerse yourself in the sublime elegance of Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres Blanc 2022, beautifully produced in the heart of the renowned Meursault appellation, within Burgundy, France. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
5 Star Wine. Racked to tank but this has fallen clear. This has the most elegant bouquet of the three wines. This is beautiful also on the palate, with a delicious fruit throughout. Jean-Yves thinks that the 2022 is his best yet and because he has enough yield which gives greater finesse than years where the vine has struggled. This is fine-boned with perfectly judged ripeness, and will doubtless add further tension over the next few months – though otherwise seems most attractive to drink now. Very complementary oaking. Drink from 2025-2030.In BondSG$1,000.00 -

The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with exotic spices, orange zest and petals. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, its textural attack segues into an unctuous core of fruit, concluding with a long, expansive finish. In BondSG$855.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
A glowing pale lime colour. Some restrained floral notes, but not demonstrative. On the palate there is a strong line of chalky white fruit, with a discreet intensity, but clearly adequately ripe. Not a wine to drink young as there is so much more to give. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.In BondSG$1,667.56 -

Wine Advocate (92-94)
The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (Domaine) is shaping up beautifully, revealing aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, licorice and spices deftly framed by toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and powdery tannins, the Drouhin's own fully 14 hectares of this prime premier cru, which is divided equally between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.In BondSG$878.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
Fresh light lemon colour. The bouquet indicates a little more flesh, as is typical, but not at the expense of precision. As always this is extraordinarily intense on the palate, not yet as fleshy as it will become, but one can see into the future. Fine fruit and acid balance too, of course. 13.7% alcohol which makes sense for Clos des Mouches. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.In BondSG$1,450.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2022 Beaune Les Cras 1er Cru includes 25% whole clusters, and those really enhance the aromatics, a mixture of red and black fruit and a touch of graphite and loam. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine weight, and a dash of black pepper towards the lingering finish. Wonderful smooth texture here. Worth seeking out.In BondSG$1,667.56 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine.In BondSG$954.00 -

Picked between 2nd and 5th September. A very pretty clean lemon and lime. The oak is very well integrated into the classy nose. Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. A fuller purple than either Arlot cuvée, which is as normal. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back. Drink from 2030-2037. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
A mid crimson colour, slightly deeper than Mont des Oiseaux. Rather more pure red fruit on the bouquet. Fine tension, medium plus bodied, more strawberry than raspberry, with an even fruit through to the finish, where the fine tannins and light acidity are in balance. Drink from 2029-2036.
