Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) A fine deep purple, with brilliance. The bouquet has the energy which we expect with that extra note of headiness. The Malconsorts opens out gorgeously and is kept fresh by a good thread of acidity. Pure, long, fine, lifted, medium plus bodied but there is a little bit of majesty here nonetheless. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91) A similar bright fresh purple, with just a little more fruit weight on the palate. A little bit plusher in texture than the village Auxey, but still with notable acidity behind. A crunchy energy alongside the darker fruit. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) (5 Star Wine) First we tasted the component parts. (1) Young vines from 1980s. A deep concentrated purple. Lesser foliage in the hot dry summer has concentrated the colour and other aspects, giving a dark style of fruit as well, with a nutty finish, but good acidity. (2) A blend, mainly from plot #3 and a bit of #1. Mid purple in colour, less demonstrative on the nose. A much suppler style of fruit, less forceful acidity, fine length, more typical Epenots here. (3) Old vines, 90+ years old: A deep glowing purple. A little more intensity, a gorgeous quality of deep red fruit, just a touch tougher in its tannins, plus the acidity. (4) Press wine: dark purple, powerful rather than fine on the nose, more volatile, but could be useful in the blend. Sweet thick dark red to black fruit. Chunky stuff. And now the blend: A deep purple colour with only a very slightly lighter rim. The bouquet suggests poise as the fruit has melded together harmoniously. On the palate this is, as almost always, a much more complete wine than the individual parts. The wine seems to push down deeper while retaining all the class of the very best components. We are approaching the cusp of red and black fruit, the acidity is perfectly harnessed and the tannins are fine grained. Potentially a very fine Clos des Epeneaux. Drink from 2032-2040+. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) Six barrels, two of them new. A medium to bright purple. The nose is invigorating with as little as 10% whole bunches, enough to add a floral note. This is lively on the palate, a Fremiets which has remembered it is in Volnay, not Pommard, delightfully stylish at the finish. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) From the usual four vineyards. Deep crimson. The bouquet has quite an elegant style even if the individual fruits are not yet quite with us. Quite a firm structure behind but sitting well with the deep red fruit. Balanced and stylish, with good ageing potential. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) 80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. A light but fine bouquet, all quite discreet, then rather more fruit intensity on the palate, quite linear but not without a little flesh on the bones. Apples washed with lime. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Another beautiful bouquet after an elegant colour. This keeps building, and seems to have rediscovered the magic of Combettes which I thought was lost in the hottest years. There is a fulsome weight of white fruit, while retaining energy. Burghound (91-93) Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in order More Info

Burghound (91-93) Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years More Info

Solid red crimson colour, with a delicious red fruit nose with its mineral overlay. Alpine strawberries, fair concentration, very detailed, maybe just needs to kick on more at the finish. Decanter (93) TOP VALUE This wine has a ripe, plummy fruit aroma and earthy complexity that develop on the palate. Straight and a little strict, it will still drink on release but will be better in three to five years. The grapes come from a 2.54ha holding planted in 1971 and 1982, on limestone soils exposed to the south, making this an exceptional site. More Info
