Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) (5 Star Wine) 30% new wood. Fresh mid purple. The bouquet is wonderfully lifted, Antoine explains they use a particularly light hand with this cuvee to avoid the potential austerity. The acidity is fine and the tannins are ripe, while there is still that clear backbone to the fruit which Vaucrains should have. Very persistent, and such high-class fruit. Drink from 2032-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) Racked, and thus fully blended, to be bottled by the end of November. Mid purple, with a perfumed dark red fruit. Vigorous, well-balanced tannins, and good but not trenchant acidity. A fine long finish which remains fresh even though the fruit is clearly ripe. Very persistent. Drink from 2029-2037. Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is more transparent and mineral-driven than the Charmes, the limestone soils flooding through the aromatics, defining them. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and gentle grip. It’s quite energetic with a tensile finish. Once this fills out during the remainder of its barrel maturation, this will be a great Chambolle. More Info

Vinous (89-91) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. It's not bad, but it needs to gain some flesh in the coming months. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91) In bottle. Pale in colour with an attractive nose, the perfume of fruit which is correctly ripe. Fresh behind, still good acidity. Clean, pretty and will fill out from here. Very persistent. Drink from 2027-2032. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040. More Info

Wine Advocate (93-95) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the highlights of the range this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) A bright ruby purple. Like the Chambolle the bouquet is all about a primary energy. The Vosne is if anything a tad more precise. Also shows the oak a little more and an extra tannin. Backward, needs more elevage, but very promising. Drink from 2030-2036. More Info

The markedly sleeker and more refined middleweight flavors possess a lovely sense of delineation on the dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This is pretty much textbook Damodes that could be enjoyed young or kept for a decade plus. In a word, lovely. More Info

Firm reduction masks the fruit though there is again a beguiling sense of underlying tension suffusing the detailed and stony medium-bodied flavors that flash good power on the moderately austere and lingering if mildly warm finish that is supported by relatively fine-grained tannins. In contrast to the Damodes that could reasonably be enjoyed young, this compact effort is clearly in need of at least moderate to longer-term cellaring. More Info

The much bigger broad-shouldered flavors also possess outstanding density and power while exuding evident minerality on the precise, firm and very serious finale that delivers excellent length where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is usually the undisputed best wine in the range but in 2022, the Perrières may well give it a run for its money. More Info

Here the super-fresh and vibrant medium weight flavors are not as concentrated or powerful but they are notably finer as well as more mineral-driven on the firm, serious and overtly austere finale. The medium-bodied palate is fresh with finely chiseled tannins and impressive structure, yet finishes harmonious and pure. Bon vin. More Info

Burghound (90-92) A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping. More Info

The well-balanced palate is tensile and edgy with a keen thread of acidity. Bitter lemon and orange rind enliven the finish. Good potential. More Info

Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and forest floor scents on the nose, with a faint hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit and fine tannins. There is a little compactness towards the finish at the moment, but it is surfeit with freshness and tension. A hint of white pepper surfaces on the aftertaste. What a lovely Marsannay this will be. More Info

A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The very supple and fleshy middleweight flavors possess a seductive texture while exhibiting enough depth and persistence on the balanced finale to be interesting. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry. Touches of fig and dates tincture the black fruit. Was this picked just a day or two later than optimal? It feels too sweet for my liking and compared to the previous vintage. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a very tempting bouquet, beautifully defined and one of the purest from Grivot this vintage. There's a subtle flinty quality to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure, edgy, thanks to the slightly chalky tannins. A very fine perfumed nose, with a blacker note on top of the red fruit, the touch of garrigue for which Roncières is noted, a saline touch also behind the red fruit, with some orange zest.
