Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) From the upper part of Les Treux. Glowing purple. The nose is discreet. The palate does the Echezeaux latticework thing with lots of detail, and exceptional length. Goes on dancing, tiptoeing, across the palate for a long time. Just one barrel. The fruit stays with me. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94) A fascinating plot worked by horse and hand, as they cannot get access with the tractor. Super sensual yet with total finesse, a depth of fruit, a feeling of royalty in the quality, a little touch of quality pepper at the finish but it is evidently the vineyard speaking. Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. More Info

Vinous (86-88) The 2022 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a relatively light but fresh bouquet with slightly darker fruit than other Hautes-Côtes I tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and fine body, given its class, with a confit-like finish. This should be delicious. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) From the usual four vineyards. Deep crimson. The bouquet has quite an elegant style even if the individual fruits are not yet quite with us. Quite a firm structure behind but sitting well with the deep red fruit. Balanced and stylish, with good ageing potential. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

There is a fine weight of fruit, building steadily, lifting deep cherry notes, with an excellent texture, serge not silk, but it provides a fine backbone. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90) Mature vines in the lower central part of Grèves, with all bunches destemmed, two weeks cuvaison, 35% new wood, still in barrel, bottling expected in March. Crimson red, a rather sombre nose, lacks life. The oak is currently much too powerful and slightly dries the wine. Dark red fruit some spice, and a touch of liquorice, but with a slightly bitter finish. In a difficult place at the moment. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) Fine mid purple. Two barrels, two producers, some Mazoyères mixed in. 100% new wood, grains fins. This also is pretty massive, though that perhaps hides the character of Charmes whereas it supports Clos Vougeot. Still, it is important to defend a little more extraction at a time when too many feet are being taken too far off the pedal. There is a light and unimportant toasty reduction, plus some of the sweet Charmes strawberry fruit, then a crunchy mineral note to the finish. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93) Laurent characterises Argillats as a hot and cold terroir. 15% whole bunch vinification, 3 barrels of which two new. Not quite so deep in colour and a little lighter in fruit, though the oak marks the nose, and the palate. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) 80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. Burghound (91-93) Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in order More Info
