Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru is showing a little more oak than other cuvées, though it marries well with the fruit, touches of menthol percolating through with time, quite lively and precocious. The palate is well-balanced and quite intense on the entry, with orange rind and subtle peachy notes. It builds nicely in the glass and fans out with a sense of brio on the finish. This will be difficult to resist when young. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) A bright fresh mid purple. The bouquet is superb, in a really lush and almost creamy red berry fruit, not as wild as some until a little savoury touch at the finish. Complex, a fine weave to the texture, with pure red berry fruit coming out at the finish. Despite its location I tend to think of Bonnes Mares as a Morey style Grand Cru, but you can certainly see the touch of Chambolle in this. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) Grown in the red soil sector. Their vines in the upper part, on white soil, are still too young to include. Mid crimson red. Plenty of whole bunches on the nose, so I love it, along with the slightly wilder aspect typical of Bonnes Mares. Very complete with a beautiful ripe round dark red fruit suffusing the middle of the palate, and very good acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97) In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Mid lemon yellow. A mix of engaging ripe fruit and some reduction. Complex, but also tightly wound, a tannic structure behind. It isn’t singing at this stage of its life, but I don’t doubt the qualities, so this should reach the upper end of the range. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Another beautiful bouquet after an elegant colour. This keeps building, and seems to have rediscovered the magic of Combettes which I thought was lost in the hottest years. There is a fulsome weight of white fruit, while retaining energy. Just enough acidity, with ripe apples at the finish. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is bright, tense and nicely focused. Lemon peel, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper lend notable energy to this wonderfully vibrant, sculpted Puligny. All the elements are so well balanced. Saline notes emerge in the glass, supporting the beautifully persistent finish nicely. This is so attractive. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) 5 Star Wine. Mid yellow, with a biscuity touch. Seems unsubtle until you get to the palate which is super powerful but also with subtlety. This Monopole vineyard comprises four distinct terroirs though they are always assembled. An electric backbone stops the power overturning the balance. Yellow fruit, and then an extraordinary, indeed grand cru, weight. Incisive white fruit finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. More Info

Little white fruits and flowers, perfectly nuanced, very slightly richer at the back and extraordinarily long on the palate. Perfect fruit acid matching all the way through. Drink from 2030-2038. Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose, with a mélange of red and blueberry fruit, crushed violet and light iris flower scents. This is going to be very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and layers of mineral-rich red fruit counterbalanced by a perfectly judged line of acidity. It discretely fans out on the finish and feels tender despite the power here. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) (5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info
