Bordeaux 2022 En Primeur - Left Bank
The Left Bank of Bordeaux is located on the west side of the Gironde River and is home to some of the region's most renowned wineries. The area's unique terroir, with gentle slopes and a wide variety of gravel, stones, sand, limestone, and clay soils, make it perfect for the production of Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux wine. Among the famous communes, Pauillac, St-Julien, and Margaux are home to prestigious estates like Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion, Châtea Léoville Las-Cases, Château Ducru Beaucaillou, and Château Palmer, among others. Many of these blue-chip wineries from the Left Bank are considered excellent names to keep in a long-term portfolio.

Jeb Dunnuck (95)Orange blossoms, honeycomb, ming flowers, and caramelized peach are just some of the nuances in the 2022 Clos Haut-Peyraguey, a ripe, round, full-bodied Sauternes that's balanced, has the vintage's richer, opulent style, and a great finish. It’s beautifully done, and while I love it today, it will clearly evolve gracefully over the coming two decades. |

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (95)Old vines in hot vintages are always a good bet, and these are considerably older than most, clocking in at somewhere around 170 years. Always a wine with a saline twist, and it somehow seems even more heightened in 2022, contrasting with richly textured sinewy tannins and sweet bilberry fruits, edges of tomato leaf and soy, a freshness that I have not found in many wines. Distinctive, edge of austerity right now, mouthwatering finish, thoroughly worth seeking out, great stuff from Stephane Dief. Harvest September 21. TIny quantities though - the whole production will be aged in one new oak barrel and two glass Wine Globes for 12 months, then after blending moved into an earthenware jarre for a further eight months. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2022 Clos Manou has a well-defined and succinct bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow, blue fruit and crushed stone aromas unfurling with aeration. This is heads above other Médoc wines that I tasted from this flight. The palate is medium-bodied, detailed and very harmonious, with seamlessly integrated oak, a fluidity that marks this out and exquisite mineralité on the finish. This is brilliant. |

Jeb Dunnuck (91)The 2022 Clos Marsalette is juicy and complex, with a vibrant style in its black cherries, darker currant, leafy tobacco, and earthy nuances. These carry to a medium-bodied, elegant, seamless Pessac-Léognan with good acidity and length. I like it today, yet it should have a solid 10- to 15-year drink window. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2022 Bonneau from Closiot has a little more complexity on the nose compared to others in this flight, with acacia honey, lanolin and orange pith scents. Fine delineation, if missing a bit of vigour. The palate is well balanced with a viscous texture, one of the few wines in this flight with acidity. Gentle grip with a marmalade-tinged finish. Enjoy this over the next 15 to 20 years. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)Looking at the 2022 Château Cos D'Estournel, this awesome Saint-Estèphe checks in as a normal blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in 50% new oak. Remarkably concentrated yet with a graceful elegance, it has sensational cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and subtle tobacco-driven aromatics, full-bodied richness, a deeply layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a monumental finish. Hitting 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.79, it's as good a Cos d'Estournel as has ever been made. It actually has ample upfront appeal yet won't hit the early stages of its prime drinking window for another decade, and it will have 50-75 years of overall longevity. |

Jeb Dunnuck (94)The 2022 Château Cos Labory comes from the team at Cos D'Estournel and is based on 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc raised in 50% new French oak. This saturated purple-hued beauty boasts a great nose of smoky red and black fruits interwoven with notes of graphite, tobacco, and crushed stone. It's a rich, full-bodied, concentrated 2022 with sweet tannins and no hard edges. It already offers pleasure, yet I wouldn’t be surprised to see this still going strong at age 30. |
