The 2014 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett #1 displays a lovely, clear, deep, rich and flinty bouquet of great purity and finesse. It is full-flavored, juicy and complex on the palate, well structured and very persistent in the finish, and structured by a significant minerality that makes this is pretty dry-tasting Riesling. The “regular” 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett (bearing A.P. #3) leads with quince and peach accented by mint, cress, ginger and lemon, setting up an overall impression of coolness, but also of brightness, with stimulating cut and pungency analogous to that of the corresponding Braune Kupp. In the background is a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. The phenolic concentration here belies a vintage with relatively generous yields even as the efficacious acidity and levity defy preconceptions concerning a year marked by summer heat and drought. The multifaceted finish, transparent to wet stone underpinnings, is tongue-tinglingly vibrant. Here is a Riesling Kabinett to really grab and hold your attention even as it delivers consummate refreshment and a bit of thought-provoking intrigue to accompany its entertainment value.

The velvety, creamy nectarine fruit comes across as bright and elegant thanks to this Riesling's refreshing acidity. Juicy, spicy and pure on the finish, with a delicately luscious quality. An excellent Spätlese in this decidedly difficult vintage for the Saar.

Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

The 2017er Scharzhofberger TBA was harvested at well over 200° Oechsle. What is remarkable here is that the wine proves so delicate and elegant despite its huge ripeness. The nose develops stunningly complex notes of greengage, date, marzipan, raisin, and fine herbs all wrapped into great creamy elements. The wine develops a stunningly vibrant yet also superbly creamy feel on the palate, where more date mingles with herbs and spices to make for a surprisingly refined and multi-layered feel for such a “big” TBA. The wine grows in oiliness and presence as it develops on the palate yet always remains focused and refined. It leaves one with a great airy feel of exotic dried fruits, whipped cream and honey in the never-ending finish. This is simply a perfect TBA in the making.

Influence of botrytis has steered this bottling in a very dried-fruit direction, with purple plum, white peach and quince on the nose taking on a pasted impression on the palpably dense, glossy palate. There is also a delicate aura of raw mushroom. Licks of cinnamon stick and lime zest add to the vibrancy and tactile grip of a severely concentrated finish. This definitely needs some time.
