Mosel

The Mosel wine region follows the Mosel river from its source to where it joins the Rhine. The best vineyards are sited on steep south facing slopes which are very hard to cultivate but provide ample reward for that work in the end result of the wine. The two most prestigious areas for viniculture are the Saar and Ruwer. Here the excellent Riesling can be delicate but bursting with complexity.

  • Joh. Jos. Prum Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 2011 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

Crushed stone, sage, green tea, as well as black tea smokiness envelop the fresh apple, cherry and lime aromas of a Prum 2011 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett, but fruit comes to the fore on an infectiously juicy, buoyant, and satin-textured palate, with smoky, herbal, alkaline and crushed stone elements setting-up a positively shimmering sense of dynamic interactivity that persists into a bracing and succulently-sustained finish. The residual sugar here is impeccably-integrated, as was the case with the corresponding generic Kabinett (and in fact, at just over 30 grams, it’s analytically only a tad higher), and even at 9.5% alcohol this positively dances across your tongue. Look to be charmed for at least the better part of two decades by this excellent value.

    Vinous (92)

Fresh cherry and lime garlanded in lily and laced with basil, mint and wintergreen inform a perfumed nose and a lusciously juicy, polished, buoyant, coolingly herbal palate. Freshness and vivacity are the watchwords for a refreshingly lingering, multifaceted finish underlain by wet stone and supportively but only subtly kissed with sweetness. Given 9 percent alcohol, one can be sure that the residual sugar is at a modest levels, yet there is all of the levity one could wish for from a Kabinett.

  • Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2020 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2020 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is discreet and remarkably coolish on the dense and lemon-scented nose compared to Zeltingen and Bernkastel. White peach and nectarine aromas intertwined with coolish broken slate aromas make this a savory and irresistible Auslese, even though, or exactly because of it, this is so discreet and only subversively erotic on the nose. The palate then reveals stunning lightness and finesse based on a filigreed structure and highly refined and zesty acidity. This is almost weightless, but it has a sweet core that materializes the fruit, whereas in the transcendental Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, it's more of an idea. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. • Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese 2010 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

Lemon, pineapple, and blackcurrant site-typically scent the Prum 2010 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese and are then projected onto a palate underlain with wet stone. A faintly smoky, prickly aura of reduction doesn’t preclude one relishing this wine’s effusive, delectable juiciness. Indeed, like the bit of CO2 Spritz that typically characterizes Prum Rieslings, it somehow enhances the wines appealingly invigorating nervous energy. Salt and stone seem to be thoroughly deposited in a tongue-quivering finish. Expect this to – again in estate-typical fashion – reward 20-30 years’ bottle maturation.

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is intense and complex on the still introverted but complex nose that shows clear, bright fruit aromas (baby pineapple) intermingled with fine, flinty slate notes. What an aristocratic appearance! Round, crystalline and saline on the palate, this 2020 Auslese is much more openhearted and fruity as well as frisky and frivolous than it pretends to be on the nose. This is a really Catholic Riesling or a picture-book Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese. Its finish, however, is Protestant: rigorously linear, straight and with serious structure and grip. The 2014 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is more open than the Graacher Himmelreich (#AP 19) and displays a very delicate bouquet of white fruits intermixed with vegetal and subtle slate aromas. Refined and juicy on the palate, this wine has a perfect balance of a fruity sweetness and a finely racy acidity. This Kabinett is very expressive and complex in its mineral and grippy finish. It is impressively long in the finish, but due to the piquancy and minerality, not due to alcohol that is just 8%.

The 2020 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese offers a remarkably coolish, very bright, precise and delicate nose of very fine Riesling fruit and flinty slate aromas. Saline, perfectly round and refined on the palate, this is a filigreed but lush and oh-so-delicate and airy, virtually celestial Himmelreich with crystalline, highly delicate acidity. This is a pristine, light yet long and saline, incredibly frisky and elegant Mosel Spätlese whose clarity and finesse is mind-blowing. An incomparable beauty. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. On the palate, this is a round and intense, mouth-filling and lush, almost creamy-textured Himmelreich with a long, complex and saline finish. It needs some time, though. 7.5% stated alcohol. The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is deep and intense on the nicely reductive yet concentrated and spicy-mineral nose that reveals a flinty/crunchy slate aroma with generous but elegant and refined fruit and subtle grapefruit aromas. On the palate, this Auslese displays a fine raisin aroma of perfectly ripe and overripe Riesling grapes, whereas the textured is highly finessed and beautifully balanced. This is impossible to spit, as the crystalline acidity is so delicate and interwoven with the fruit and texture of this persistently salty beauty. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

    Wine Advocate (98)

All in all, this is the world's most ecumenical Sonnenuhr. Pure fascination. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 38 21 in July 2022.

The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is concentrated and fresh on the aromatic nose that is immediately present but also still reductive. Ripe stone fruit aromas intermingle with notes of crushed stones on a deep foundation of aromas from the soil and the fruit of old vines. On the palate, the 2021 is very fine but also intense, savory, saline and lush, leading to a long, intense and highly digestible finish with crunchy and cleansing slate features.
