Austria

Austria is renowned for its top-quality wines that boast distinctive flavour profiles and are crafted using traditional winemaking methods. This Central European nation produces a diverse range of wines, from refreshing whites to robust reds, each with its own individual style and taste.

Grüner Veltliner, a dry white wine renowned for its zesty acidity, tangy citrus notes, and herb-infused undertones, is one of Austria's most celebrated wines. Other popular grape varieties in Austria include Riesling, Blaufränkisch, and Zweigelt.

Austrian winemakers are recognized for their expertise in utilizing traditional winemaking techniques such as ageing wines in oak barrels and using indigenous grape varieties. This approach results in wines that exhibit unique flavours and aromas that are distinct to the region.

With its diverse terroir and winemaking techniques, there is always something new and exciting to explore. Some of the top wineries worth mentioning include Domane Wachau, FX PichlerHirsch, and Kracher, which have earned a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in Austria. View below to explore our curated selection from Austria.

Vinous (97)

Here is another Nikolaihof offering that I was given a rare opportunity to taste prior to bottling. But perhaps the Saahs family will rethink their generosity with sneak previews, given that I now feel compelled to publish a substantially updated tasting note to reflect the significantly more impressive showing delivered by this wine a year after its late summer 2016 bottling. As before, the nose is head-turningly complex, offering black tea and Latakia tobacco smokiness, coriander-seed pungency, high-toned pistachio extract, intimations of red currant, lime and white peach and a remarkable array of mineral and animal intimations: sea breeze, sweat, wet stone, oyster liquor and mussel stock. What I earlier described as a “silken and expansive yet buoyant palate” has taken on an almost custardy richness. Yet the accompanying juicy brightness of fruit – now including a tang of fresh ripe tomato – has by no means diminished in animation, intensity or sheer refreshment. The vibrant finish tugs at one’s salivary glands with suggestions of urchin roe and shellfish stock while delivering a kaleidoscope of herbal, mineral and fruity diversity.

Complete, warm, complex nose and then amazing grip on the finish. Such vice-like grip! Yet with wonderful freshness and life. This has so much to offer. It's like essence of Riesling. The finish is crawling with (good) micro-organisms somehow. A rich panoply of wild-flower flavours without being at all heavy.

Stony savor swings as a vestige alongside the zesty citrus on the wine's closed nose. The palate starts off tight and taut, right now it is all sleek and stony. Time in the glass allows glimpses of what still lies deeply buried: a rich, profound yeastiness reverberating with peppery, salty depth. This is an astonishingly concentrated package that, may just be a time capsule that survives us. Drink 2030–2050.

Tasted from magnum. Although this was a vintage affected by botrytis, it's not really evident on the nose, which is vivid, herbal and smoky. It still displays explosive fruit, rich but fresh, spicy and zesty. It's full-bodied but very mineral, and any botrytis is now integrated into the palate. The finish is persistent but not aggressive. Overall, a magnificent demonstration of how these wines can age.

The 2001 Weissenkirchen Ried Achleiten Riesling Smaragd is very clear and fresh on the intense but botrytis-free nose, with herbal and floral tea aromas complementing the clear apricot notes. Pure, salty, fresh and very elegant on the palate, this is a gorgeous matured Riesling with great vitality and tension, still with good grip and a dry, straight character. Very salty. Great and ready to go for another decade or more. Tasted in Dürnstein, Wachau, September 2018.

A subtle but pure note of Mandarin orange rises from the glass. On the palate, a far more lemony flavor takes over, reminiscent as much of fresh, ripe Amalfi lemon peel as of candied lemon.
