A perfumed style, boasting floral, cherry, kirsch and licorice flavors. Slightly chewy, yet elegant overall, with fine balance and a lingering finish of macerated cherry, earth and tobacco notes. Shows fine length and intensity, leaving an essence of mineral. Best from 2021 through 2043. 1,941 cases made.Inc. GSTSG$311.64 -

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is supple and ripe with aromas of candied cherries, mocha, crushed flowers, and sweet earth. It pours a garnet color and shows some richness, leaning a touch toward developing sooner. Medium-bodied and approachable, with ripe tannins, good balance, and a delicate savory note of tea leaf on the finish, it offers more immediacy and should drink well over the next 8-10 years.Inc. Medium youthful ruby in hue, the 2020 Barolo Conca is showing off in this sunny vintage, with notes of crushed strawberries, sweet cedar, incense, and fresh lavender. Noble and long, this elegant and medium-bodied Barolo offers up wonderful length and a haunting finish revealing notes of orange peel and rocky earth. The blue fruit and freshness are impressive here. At the same time, there’s richness and focus with ripe fruit. Yet, it remains cool and bright. Superb center palate with great fruit and depth, but compact and focused. Needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2021.Inc. GSTSG$322.79 -

The 2018 Barolo Ornato is somber, brooding and quite closed in on itself. There's a ton of aromatic and flavor complexity, but the fruit is very much in the background. It will be interesting to see if the 2018 emerges, or if it remains rather compact, as it is today. There's a good bit of density and power behind all of that tannin. Hints of blood orange, crushed raspberry, rose petal and cinnamon linger on the super-classic finish.Inc. GSTSG$1,771.08 -

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is a bright ruby red color and is pretty and fruity on the nose, with notes of wild strawberries, herbes de Provence, orange zest, and saline. The palate is mouthwatering and coiled, with a haunting feel on the snappy finish, which is tangy and mineral-noted at this young stage. It's going to need time. Drink 2028-2048.Inc. GSTSG$706.01 -

The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet spice and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true in terms of the palate, where the wine offers mid-weight intensity with melting tannins. This ambitious release of 300,000 bottles is slated to hit the market in fall 2023.Inc. GSTSG$205.07 -

Two standouts from the 2020 vintage are Montefico and Asili. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico comes from a site that is distant from the warm air that travels through the Tanaro River Valley and is closed within an amphitheater. This is a beautiful vineyard that looks toward the village of Neive and has active limestone soils. The wine is especially compact in texture and has a distinctly herbal note, with dried rosemary and lavender, that gives it a Mediterranean or botanical feel. The palate delivers a brief moment of softness, but otherwise the wine is structured and rich.Inc. GSTSG$608.68 -

Normally, Produttori del Barbaresco President Aldo Vacca puts Montefico, Rabajà, Muncagota and Montestefano at the end of his flight of Riservas. But in this year's presentation, he put the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano fourth to last instead of last. This wine is usually the darkest and the most austere in the series. However, the 2020 does not live up to its usual flavor profile. The aromas are quite ripe, even overripe, with prune and raisin. The tannins are soft, leading to a succulent and chewy mouthfeel. My recommendation is to give this wine a shorter drinking window.Inc. GSTSG$550.91 -

Full ruby-red. Aromas of roasted red fruits, dried rose, marzipan and smoke. Sweet on entry, then rather broad but a bit stunted in the middle palate, with slightly disjointed acidity. The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano shows a high degree of boldness and opulence. This is an immediately generous wine with soft fruit flavors of blackberry and Morello cherry. It shows thick natural density with good tannin management. You sense the structure at the back but the wine never feels astringent or rough. Riserva Montestefano exhibits a tight, thickly woven texture that will contribute to slow the wine's future evolution. In other words, this wine is built like a tank.Inc. GSTSG$140.50 -

The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is the biggest of the bunch. This wine delivers a lasting sense of structure and intensity that is especially apparent as this Barbaresco hits the palate. The bouquet exhibits signs of ripe fruit with soft layers of blackberry preserves and cherry liqueur. The wine's tannic structure is solid and firmly stitched together, yet this wine is slightly softer and perhaps sweeter than the Riserva Muncagota, for example. This is yet another wine destined for long bottle-aging.Inc. GSTSG$167.39 -

The Pajè vineyard faces the Tanaro River and is tucked at back of a narrow theater of vines. The site is often characterized by a floral note of rose and violet that comes thought nicely in the Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. With those sweet floral notes comes an open-knit mouthfeel and a more immediate drinking style with soft, silky tannins. In fact, this was the second of nine wines served in a flight that started with the lightest Riservas and ended with the most powerful wines.Inc. GSTSG$584.70 -

This is the first wine served in a flight of nine that increase in intensity and power moving forward. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pora opens to a medium-light color with garnet highlights. Aromas include wild cherry, cassis and blue flower. You also get hints of crushed limestone. The Pora vineyard is near the Tanaro River Valley, where warm air accumulates, and the vines are planted in fertile soils. The extra heat and humidity of the area makes for accessible wines that are ready to drink and are less complex overall.Inc. GSTSG$528.02 -

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes from an area that is further removed from the Tanaro River and has southwestern exposures. It shows a typical profile for Nebbiolo with rich fruit, a velvety mouthfeel and textural volume that is delivered with ample blackberry, blackcurrant and spice. The character of this wine is generous and rich. There is plenty of meat on these bones.Inc. GSTSG$541.08 -

Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 2019 epitomises the quintessence of Piedmont’s esteemed Barolo region. Crafted from meticulously selected Nebbiolo grapes harvested from the prestigious Marcenasco vineyard, this vintage showcases exceptional expression of terroir. Under Renato Ratti’s expert guidance, the grapes undergo traditional fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in a combination of large Slavonian oak and fine barriques for 36 months. This meticulous process imparts a harmonious balance of power and elegance, revealing aromas of ripe red berries, truffle, and subtle spice nuances. The structure is robust yet refined, with velvety tannins and a persistent, refined finish. Renato Ratti, renowned for his commitment to quality and sustainability, ensures each bottle reflects the rich heritage and distinctive character of Barolo. Ideal for both seasoned enthusiasts and discerning collectors, the Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 2019 promises an exquisite addition to any fine wine collection.

This is the bread-and-butter Barolo from Ratti, with 70,000 bottles produced. Fruit is sourced from over 15 hectares of vine planted on characteristic blue marl soils. The 2020 Barolo Marcenasco is an international classic, and I have had the fortune of following this wine over 20-plus vintages. I always like the unassuming personality of Marcenasco. It gives you character but never stretches too far in any one stylistic direction. This vintage shows some sweet oak and cinnamon, but you also get plenty of bright fruit. You could fault it for a little too much oak, which appears with more strength in 2020.Inc. GSTSG$200.34 -

Bright red. Enticing aromas of violet, licorice and minerals. Fresh and juicy; saline, licorice and dark plum flavors are lifted by vibrant acidity. Finishes savory and long, with an enticing glyceral, fleshy quality. Aged about two years in large 20- to 45-hL Slavonian oak barrels and 500-liter tonneaux and is made with a 75%/25% blend of grapes from the vineyards in Romitorio and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, respectively.Inc. This wine blew me away and remains one of my favorites in this report. The organic San Giusto a Rentennano 2021 Percarlo is all Sangiovese and represents excellent work by detail-minded vintner Luca Martini di Cigala. It shows delightful intensity and richness backed by chiseled fruit and lifted aromas of blackcurrant, spice, tar, earth and violet. There is power here, but the wine is also delicate. I love the determination of this vintage. Percarlo plays beautifully on the nose and over the palate with freshness, chalky tannins and lingering fruit. There's nothing heavy about it. It ages in 500-liter and 30-hectoliter oak casks for 22 months. Production is 18,528 bottles.Inc. GSTSG$970.54 -

The Paolo Scavino 2021 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc, from a 2.5-hectare site in Castiglione Falletto on a southwest-facing slope, shows an especially rich and textured side with aromas of dark fruit that are accented by clove, cinnamon, spice and even a hint of bitter chocolate. This is a bold expression of Nebbiolo with elegantly managed tannins that are quite firm and need ample time to resolve. Production is 12,100 bottles.Inc. GSTSG$821.21 -

Firm tannins provide the backbone for the 2010 Barbaresco Currà. A wonderfully layered, rich wine, the 2010 impresses for its resonance, beauty and class. Nothing in particular stands out, the 2010 is a wine of total harmony and symmetry. The Currà is quite floral, high-toned and spiced, not unlike the Fausoni, but with a little more mid-palate pliancy. At the same time, the tannins remain a bit firm, so a measure of patience is required.Inc. GSTSG$739.46
