Vinous (89)

The 2010 Rosso del Bepi has a savory, exotic and almost animalistic personality that keeps you coming back to the glass, as a dusting of confectioner’s sugar gives way to wild strawberry, spiced citrus, sour apple and hints of flowery undergrowth. Its textures are soft, offset by salty minerals, a hint of bitter coffee and a tart display of red and black fruits. This tapers off a bit short and struggles to find balance, with a slight green streak running through its lingering note of cherry pits and savory spice. Because of heavy rains, Quintarelli decided to declassify their Amarone and produce this rendition of Rosso del Bepi instead.

A rich, heady wine, the 2010 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is arguably the most complex and nuanced of Luca Roagna's 2010 Barbarescos, as the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is magnificent. Deep, pliant and beautifully structured in the glass, the 2010 impresses with its superb harmony. Sweet red stone fruits, chalk, iron, mint and wild flowers are laced into the incisive, tannic finish. This super-classic, old-vine Nebbiolo is the epitome of the 'iron fist in a velvet glove' that is often invoked to describe Barolo and Barbaresco. Patience is key.

One of the many highlights in this vertical, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is exceptionally beautiful. Today, the 2010 comes across as refined and polished, with veins of bright acidity that give the wines its sense of energy, drive and polish. Over the last few months, the 2010 has begun to close in on itself. I can't say that is surprising given how much stuffing there is. Readers lucky enough to own the 2010 are in for a real treat. When all is said and done, the 2010 is profound and riveting in every way.

One of the real showstoppers in this tasting, the 2010 La Ricolma is a wine of pure and total class. When it was younger, the 2010 was a powerhouse, but today it is much more perfumed and refined, with a real sense of grace that runs through it. Dried flowers, mint, sweet red cherry, blood orange and lavender are all beautifully lifted in a translucent, deep Merlot with Sangiovese-like inflections that deliver the goods. This is a superb showing. From the stand point of weather, 2010 is very similar to 2013. Luca Martini di Cigala explained. In tasting, though, the 2010 is quite a bit more refined. The fruit was brought in on September 24, before the heavy rains that fell in early October that year, during harvest. This is a phenomenal showing from the 2010.

Layers of dark fruit, graphite and exotic spices build to a crescendo of aromas and flavors that captivates the senses. Although it is early, it certainly looks like the 2010 Percarlo is set to take its place as one of the greatest wines ever made at San Giusto.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Phenomena is dark and powerful, but that has been achieved with a loss of freshness. Giancarlo Pacenti’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is another superb wine. The contours are more modern and the fruit leans towards the darker end of spectrum, yet all the elements are wonderfully in balance. The Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy 2010 Langhe Virtus is a blend of 60% Barbera and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is always a late release, and there's a big risk to that with so much bottle and vintage variation to account for. However, this 2010 expression has all its ducks in a row. The bouquet is concentrated and thick, with plenty of power and depth. The bouquet shows dark fruit, with licorice, camphor ash and ink. This is a treat for people who love the magic of old wines. Exactly 8,433 bottles were made.

Antinori's 2010 Tignanello is stunning, as it has been since I started tasting the component wines in 2011. Firm yet sweet, silky tannins form the backbone for this gorgeous, vivid wine. Dark red cherries, plums, cloves, mint and sage inform a Tignanello that impresses for its delineation, nuance and power. Clean, saline notes support the mineral-drenched finish. The 2010 isn't huge, but rather is a vertical wine endowed with tremendous energy and vibrancy. I can't remember a Tignanello with this much crystalline tension and pure energy. The 2010 Barolo Lazzarito is impeccably polished, silky and refined, especially for a Serralunga Barolo. Mint, violets, black fruit, smoke and deep layers of spices are some of the many notes that flesh out on the inviting, textured finish. Today, the Lazzarito is incredibly primary to the point of being raw and undeveloped, but it is explosive, bursting with energy and flat-out great. Fleshy, seductive and totally delicious, the 2010 is wonderfully expressive, even today. Intensely perfumed notes add lift and freshness, but it is the wine's depth and mid-palate pliancy that impress above all else.

The 2010 Solaia rounds out this flight in style. Swaths of tannin give the 2010 a real sense of explosive energy and vibrancy that only builds with time in the glass. A whole range of dark aromas and flavors give the 2010 its brooding, inward personality. Tasted from magnum, the 2010 is very young, but its pedigree is unmistakable.

Simply put, the 2010 Tignanello is a magnificent, towering wine from Antinori.

The 2010 Redigaffi is even more impressive with seamless integration of ripe fruit and oak spice that meet each other perfectly in the middle. It soars to new heights of elegance and power, imparting beautiful tones of black fruit, polished river stone, bacon fat and black pepper as it makes its steady ascent. The mouthfeel is fleshy and generous and there is plenty of backbone here to carry the wine forward throughout the years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038.

Smoke, tobacco, cedar and roasted coffee beans wrap around a core of juicy dark cherries and plums in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. There is plenty of depth in the glass, but, as is often the case here, three years in oak yields a wine with slightly oxidative overtones. Powerful, incisive tannins support the finish.

A wine with superb finesse and depth. So subtle and understated yet powerful and long. The tannin intensity is amazing. It just builds like a massive wave. Superb. Give this time in the bottle. The length is endless. Better in 2018.

This is also the first recent vintage I can remember tasting where the French oak is more in line with the other single-vineyard Barolos.
