In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido have become synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.

These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Experience the allure of Italian wines and immerse yourself in the rich history, diverse terroirs, and passionate winemaking that define the Italian wine scene. • Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Novantesimo 2011 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The 2011 Barolo Riserva Novantesimo is a proud and exuberant wine that does enormous justice to the vintage and to the mighty Nebbiolo grape. This is remembered as a warm growing season, and this wine is richly layered, generous and beautifully intense as a result. Dark cherry aromas are folded within spice, cured tobacco and leather. The best part is that subtle crunch or snap you get on the palate, thanks to the fresh acidity that is neatly integrated within.

The 2011 Boggina sees fruit sourced from the same single-vineyard, only this expression sees 12 days of maceration and 14 moths of barrel aging (both tonneaux and botte). This is a radically different wine that shows precision and dark focus. The BogginAnfora feels fuzzy and foggy in comparison with a broader aromatic presentation, although both wines offer considerable charm. Here, the aromas are delivered straight to your senses with power and determination. The mouthfeel is richly layered with sweet cherry and spice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

  • Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (6x75cl)

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, sensual and inviting. Wonderfully open-knit and polished, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most intriguing wines of the year. High-toned aromatics, with a touch of volatile acidity, give the wine much of its unique personality. Macerated cherries, licorice, hard candy new leather and mint are all pushed forward. The Rio Sordo cru is known for medium-bodied wines that show elegance and finesse. The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is my favorite wine among this set of new Riserva releases. This gorgeous wine is seamless in approach with balanced aromatic intensity that bridges dark fruit aromas against ethereal notes of cola, tar and licorice. (mostly aged in big barrels): Bright medium red. Lovely elegant perfume of raspberry, strawberry, rose petal, brown spices and minerals. Sweet and fine-grained, with an enticing minty medicinal reserve to its red fruit, menthol and floral flavors. Much broader on the back end than the normale, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely lift and perfume. A very pretty, distinctly calcaire wine that reminded me of Burgundy.

  • Quintarelli Amarone Classico Riserva 2011 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97+)

Only produced in select vintages when growing conditions are deemed exceptional, this is one of the most coveted bottles in Italian wine. The Quintarelli Giuseppe 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva represents the last vintage seen by Bepi himself. Giuseppe Quintarelli died in January 2012 at age 84 following his struggle with Parkinson's disease. There's magic in this wine, and we raise a glass to the master of Negrar. It delivers elegant class and concentration, fruit freshness and the power (plus 16.5% alcohol) that comes with appassimento. It's an ethereal wine from a hot and dry vintage. There are many contradictions within the bottle, but it ultimately settles on a place of balance and beauty. I opened bottle number 1,443 of only 5,726 released.

  • San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is fleshy and forward, with plenty of sweet red stone fruit, macerated cherry, tobacco, spice and plum fruit. The extracted style and accompanying imposing tannins are a bit much for the wine's mid-weight structure. The 2011 is quite ripe and intense, yet the tannins are not fully mature, which suggests heat stress may have been an issue during the torrid second half of August. I would prefer to drink the 2011 sooner rather than later, as the fruit is likely to fade before the tannins soften. Hints of crushed flowers, sweet tobacco and red flowers add the closing shades of nuance. The 2011 was aged in a combination of tonneau and 30-HL casks.

There is an irresistible dash of white truffle buried deep within. The wine is powerful and firmly constructed, but the quality of the tannins is silky and polished.

  • Prunotto Barbaresco Bric Turot 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

  • Renato Corino Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

The 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata shows why this site is so highly regarded. Sweet and perfumed at the outset, yet also quite pliant and intense, the 2011 Rocche has it all. Rose petal, pomegranate, wild flowers and cinnamon all blossom in the glass. The 2011 is super-ripe, flashy and exotic, yet it also has the pedigree to drink well for a number of years.

  • Renieri Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

A powerful, authoritative wine, Renieri's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino possesses terrific depth and overall intensity. Sweet red cherries, mint and dried herbs open up first, followed by expressive floral notes that add attractive aromatic overtones as the wine continues to open up. The 2011 is both deep yet also medium in body, with a layered feel that only adds to its considerable appeal. This is a strong showing from Renieri and proprietor Marco Bacci.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Crichet Paje 2011 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (98+)

Just bottled, the 2011 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is unbelievably refined. Sweet red cherry, rosewater, mint, dried flowers, pine and kirsch give the 2011 an upper register of perfume that is utterly beguiling. Silky and classy to the core, the 2011 is the most sensual Crichët Pajè I can remember tasting. There is plenty of tannin, that is clear, but it is also pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. This is such a gorgeous and complete wine. There is just an unreal amount of freshness for this dry, torrid year. Wow!!

  • Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

A powerful, authoritative wine, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino packs a serious punch. A host of savory, feral notes hit the palate first, followed by an array of dried cherry, dried flowers, tobacco, smoke, leather and cedar. This is one of the rare 2011s with tannins that need time to soften, as well as the density to develop nicely with further time in bottle.

  • San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Lucere 2011 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere emerges from the estate's oldest vines. Here the balance of fruit and tannin is much more successful. Sensual and layered in the glass, the Lucere offers good up-front richness to match its creamy, inviting personality. Generous black cherry, plum, smoke, spice and menthol flesh out on a resonant finish laced with attractive aromatic overtones. In this vintage, the oak and tannins are very nicely balanced, something that hasn't always been the case here. At times, the ripeness of the vintage is a bit dominant, but this is a gorgeous wine from San Filippo.

Cherished by the skilled vintners of Tenuta di Serradenari, the familial intimacy of the winemaking process traces back five generations. A powerful, structured wine, the 2011 opens up with hints of savory herbs, smoke, tobacco and menthol, all of which add nuance to the direct, expressive fruit. Stylistically, the Roncaglie is much more intense than the straight Barbaresco; not necessarily better or more complex, just a different expression of Nebbiolo.
