Italy is renowned worldwide for its exceptional red wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking traditions and diverse terroir. From the iconic regions of Tuscany and Piedmont to the hidden gems of Sicily and Veneto, Italy offers an extensive selection of fine red wines that captivate the palate and leave a lasting impression.

In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido produce some of the most renowned red wines in the world. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. These wines exhibit flavors of ripe berries, elegant tannins, and a harmonious balance that reflects the unique Tuscan terroir.

Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that produce outstanding red wines. Renowned names such as GajaVietti, and Marchesi di Barolo are synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins that develop beautifully with age.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian red wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality, showcasing the island's diverse terroir.

In the Veneto region, Amarone della Valpolicella stands out as a distinctive and powerful red wine. Wineries like Allegrini, Tommasi, and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines using dried grapes, resulting in a wine with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture.

These are just a few examples of the remarkable red wines Italy has to offer. Whether you're indulging in a classic Tuscan Sangiovese, an elegant Piedmontese Nebbiolo, a bold Sicilian Nero d'Avola, or a robust Venetian Amarone, Italian red wines transport you to the sun-drenched vineyards and embody the passion, history, and artistry of Italian winemaking.

Experience the allure of Italian red wines and discover the immense variety and quality that make them a true treasure in the world of wine. From prestigious appellations to hidden gems, Italian red wines are sure to impress even the most discerning wine enthusiasts with their complexity, elegance, and ability to age gracefully.

    Vinous (94)

The 2014 Gattinara Molsino is shy and introverted in its first impression, with quite a bit of intensity lurking in the background. Today, the Molsino is not as expressive as the Valferana, but its day will come. With a bit of aeration, the 2014 starts to show the structure, layers of nuance and resonance that will emerge more fully in time.

    Wine Advocate (94)

I had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul.

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo represents a jump forward in structure compared to the other three vineyards (Pora, Pajè and Ovello) that were tasted before this wine. The Riserva Rio Sordo shows a dark and solid personality, with a tight core of black fruit that will relax and unwind with more bottle aging in the cellar. It is also slightly sharper and more focused in terms of mouthfeel, with the kind of tannic tightness you always get with young Nebbiolo in the cooler vintages such as 2014. The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is somber and dense in this vintage. Silky Asili tannins bring out the wine's voluptuousness and soft contours. Dark red cherry and plum fruit show some of the typical Asili sensuality, but the 2014 is a powerhouse that is going to need time to come around. • Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi 2014 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2014 Rosso del Bepi is understated yet very pretty, showing nuances of woodland berries laced with sour citrus, savory herbs and a hint of animal muskiness. This washes across the palate with silken textures, yet delivers masses of tart red berries and minerals that add grippy tension. It’s remarkably fresh and zesty in character, and it’s amazing to think that the 2014 underwent the same appassimento that an Amarone did in better years. This tapers off spicy with a sour citrus twang under inner violet florals, as round tannins linger. The 2014 may not have the depth of a Quintarelli Amarone, but it instead possesses verve and is packed full of character.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Albesani 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

Drawing its fruit from a leased vineyard in Neive, the Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Albesani opens to a medium ruby color with pretty garnet highlights. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, tilled earth and black licorice. There is much more aromatic intensity here than you might expect given the rather subtle and nuanced appearance the wine makes in the glass. The soils in Albesani are fundamentally calcareous, and these conditions add to the perfumed and fragrant qualities you get here. Production for this wine is 230 cases (of 12 bottles each).

The 2014 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is an absolutely exquisite wine that shows how compelling this vintage is in Barbaresco. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully deep, the 2014 races out of the glass, showing tremendous depth, energy and pedigree. Crushed red-toned fruit, orange peel, rose petal, anise and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop, but its really the wine's balance that impresses more than anything else. It's a super classic wine from Alfredo and Luca Roagna.

    Vinous (94+)

Cinnamon, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and leather are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2014 Barbaresco Pajè. Pliant and open-knit, the 2014 is surprisingly open for a young Roagna Barbaresco, which makes it almost shockingly easy to enjoy even now (in relative terms), in what is the very early going by Roagna standards. Even, so there is plenty of Nebbiolo structure and tannin. Sweet rose petal, mint, tobacco, underbrush, game, and sweet red berry fruit add to the wine's stunning allure.

  • Roagna Barolo Pira 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

The 2014 Barolo Pira is a very pretty wine, but it is also quite open, both in its aromatics, and structural feel, where the wine feels unusually ample. Dark spice, tobacco, worn-in leather and mint are nicely laced together. This is a superb effort for the year, but I would not plan on cellaring it for too long, as it is quite open for a young Barolo, by Roagna standards. Relative to the other wines in this lineup, the Pira comes across as a touch flat and lacking in body. Much of that is attributable to the vintage.

The 2014 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is quite delicate and understated for this wine, which also means it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Macerated dark cherry, menthol, licorice, pine, spice, sweet tobacco and leather all develop in the glass. Next to the straight Pira, the Vecchie Vigne has an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness and richness that is quite attractive. For a young Roagna Barolo, the 2014 is very enticing and also accessible.

The 2014 is a marvelous, complete Barolo that has so much to offer. Macerated cherry, spice, new leather, blood orange and rose petal all flesh out in a striking Barolo that has so much to offer. One of the first wines I tasted from Voerzio was the 1992 Cerequio, a Barolo from a far weaker vintage that aged beautifully. I expect the 2014 will be gorgeous for many years to come. • Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Vigneto Monte Lodoletta 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2014 is a unique rendition of Dal Forno’s Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta. It's a remarkably pretty wine, displaying crushed ripe strawberries and plums with cinnamon, clove, vanilla bean and a cooling hint of mint. The textures are velvety, coating all that they touch in glycerol fruit concentration, yet somehow coming across as zesty and spry, contrasting weight with saturating notes of tart blackberry and savory spice. There’s a bit of a lull in the midpalate, yet it hardly takes away from the experience. At times, the Monte Lodoletta can seem almost salty, especially through its long, mouthwatering finish, where hints of cherry pits and herbs linger. This atypical yet truly enjoyable expression is the result of the extremely difficult 2014 vintage, when hail damaged and reduced the crop in the lower-elevation vineyards, followed by rain from August through September. As a result, Dal Forno decided not to produce their Amarone, and to instead focus all of their attention on the Valpolicella. The result is a wine that no Dal Forno fan should miss, but be aware that production was down 30% from an average year.

  • Salvioni Rosso di Montalcino 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is the only wine Salvioni will release in a year marked by everything except good weather. Rain and poor overall conditions during the critical summer months plus an attack of the Suzukii fruit fly during harvest and high disease pressure proved to be too much to overcome. The 2014 Rosso is an attractive wine made from the best fruit Salvioni was able to salvage. Hints of dried cherry, tobacco, spice and dried herbs add modest complexity to a mid-weight wine that is best enjoyed sooner rather than later, before the forward flavors mature too much further. For the year, there is good depth and delineation, but even the Salvionis aren't miracle workers. Production is 10,000 bottles, down sharply from the 16-17,000 that are more of the norm here. Today, it looks like there will be no Rosso in 2012, 2013 or 2015.

    Vinous (96)

The 2014 Percarlo is one of the most refined young Percarlos I can remember tasting at San Giusto. A silky, polished wine, it makes its case with persistence and length more than power alone. Dark cherry, sage, tobacco and underbrush develop in the glass, but it is the wine's persistence that is most impressive. The 2014 was aged 70% in French oak barrique and 30% in cask. Over the last few years, the introduction of larger-format oak has added a level of finesse to Percarlo that is palpable. The 2014 is one of the stars of the vintage. Don't miss it.

The soils in Albesani are fundamentally calcareous, and these conditions add to the perfumed and fragrant qualities you get here. Production for this wine is 230 cases (of 12 bottles each).

  • Roagna Barbaresco Crichet Paje 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2014 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is an absolutely exquisite wine that shows how compelling this vintage is in Barbaresco. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully deep, the 2014 races out of the glass, showing tremendous depth, energy and pedigree. Crushed red-toned fruit, orange peel, rose petal, anise and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop, but its really the wine's balance that impresses more than anything else. It's a super classic wine from Alfredo and Luca Roagna.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2014 (6x75cl)

  • Roagna Barolo Pira Vv 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2014 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is quite delicate and understated for this wine, which also means it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Macerated dark cherry, menthol, licorice, pine, spice, sweet tobacco and leather all develop in the glass. Next to the straight Pira, the Vecchie Vigne has an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness and richness that is quite attractive. For a young Roagna Barolo, the 2014 is very enticing and also accessible.

  • Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2014 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse wine that is going to require at least a few years to shed some of its formidable tannin. Big and ample on the palate, with striking depth, the 2014 captures all of the virile intensity this site is known for. The black cherry, lavender, menthol, licorice and dark spice flavors take on shades of gravitas and exoticism in this deep, structured Barolo from Roberto Voerzio.

  • Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2014 Barolo Cerequio is a gorgeous wine that melds together the pliant fruit of Cerequio with bright, savory aromatics. It’s a combination that works so well. I can't wait to see how it ages.

  • Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2014 Barolo La Serra is bright, floral and energetic, with all of the sinewy tension that is typical of this site. I would cellar the 2014 for at least a few years to allow some of the angular contours to soften. There is a good deal of inner sweetness that will emerge in time. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and dried cherry all grace this expressive, savory Barolo from Roberto Voerzio.

  • San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo 2014 (6x75cl)
