In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido produce some of the most renowned red wines in the world. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. These wines exhibit flavors of ripe berries, elegant tannins, and a harmonious balance that reflects the unique Tuscan terroir.

Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that produce outstanding red wines. Renowned names such as GajaVietti, and Marchesi di Barolo are synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins that develop beautifully with age.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian red wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality, showcasing the island's diverse terroir.

In the Veneto region, Amarone della Valpolicella stands out as a distinctive and powerful red wine. Wineries like Allegrini, Tommasi, and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines using dried grapes, resulting in a wine with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture.

These are just a few examples of the remarkable red wines Italy has to offer. Whether you're indulging in a classic Tuscan Sangiovese, an elegant Piedmontese Nebbiolo, a bold Sicilian Nero d'Avola, or a robust Venetian Amarone, Italian red wines transport you to the sun-drenched vineyards and embody the passion, history, and artistry of Italian winemaking.

  • La Ca' Nova Barbaresco Montestefano 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2018 Barbaresco Montestefano is brisk and engaging. This is an especially strict reading of Montestefano that seems to have more of Montefico-like sense of vibrancy and tension. Rosewater, orange peel, white pepper and bright red-toned fruit are all finely cut. The 2018 comes across as a touch severe today. I would cellar it for a few years and see what happens.

    Kerin O'Keefe (97)

This gorgeous wine starts out with enticing aromas of ripe berry, forest floor, rose hip and wild herb alongside a balsamic note recalling new leather. Racy linear and savory, the extremely elegant, focused palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, crushed raspberry baking spice and licorice. Taut, refined tannins and bright acidity keep it balanced and youthfully tense. Beautiful wine. It closes on an almond note. Drink 2026–2038. 13.5% abv.

  • Le Ragnaie Rosso di Montalcino 2018 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino makes itself known with a captivating and layered display of sour cherries and animal musk deepening further with crushed dried roses, minty herbs and a dusting of savory spice. It’s silky and pliant, yet energy remains high throughout. The 2018 Rosso showcases a vivid and pure display of wild strawberry with sweet tannins building toward the close. This is lifted and feminine in feel, tapering off classically dry and poised with tactile mineral tones and a hint of licorice lingering long. The 2018 is a harmonious and graceful rendition of Le Ragnaie’s Rosso that will win a lot of hearts right out of the gate.

  • Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2018 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2018 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is everything a second wine should be. Open-knit and silky, with impeccable balance and tons of sheer appeal, the 2018 is exquisite today. I would prefer to drink it on the early side in order to capture all of its freshness. In some vintages, Le Serre Nuove can be a bit imposing; in 2018 is all charm and seduction.

  • Livio Sassetti (Pertimali) Brunello di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (96)

Intense aromas of black cherries, lavender and spice, such as nutmeg. Some sandalwood and bark, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins for the vintage. Rather chewy, suggesting that additional bottle age is needed. Try after 2026.

  • Livio Sassetti (Pertimali) Rosso di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Crushed cherries, dusty rose, saddle leather, earthy minerals and shavings of cedar all come together to form a classic and utterly gorgeous bouquet on the 2018 Pertimali Rosso. Soft textures are then motivated by a stunning mix of acids and minerals with savory red fruits and spice, buzzing, practically sizzling on the senses. There’s so much energy here. The finish is long and lightly structured, showing tremendous potential, resonating on earth notes and dried fruits with a subtle tug of youthful tannin. Wow.

  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2018 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2018 Barolo Aleste is gorgeous, but also very quite today. There's terrific purity to the dark red/purplish fruit and a good bit of volume too, but readers will have to be patient. Bright acids and firm tannins lend energy. I admire the presence and texture here. The Aleste, from Cannubi Boschis, benefits from a site that can handle moisture. This is nicely done.

  • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2018 Barolo Le Vigne is a mid-weight, tightly wound wine, with a classic sense of austerity that will need at least a few years in bottle to start softening. Red cherry fruit, white flowers, mint and chalk lend brightness and tension throughout. In 2018, the blend of vineyards is Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.
