Italy is renowned worldwide for its exceptional red wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking traditions and diverse terroir. From the iconic regions of Tuscany and Piedmont to the hidden gems of Sicily and Veneto, Italy offers an extensive selection of fine red wines that captivate the palate and leave a lasting impression.

In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido produce some of the most renowned red wines in the world. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. These wines exhibit flavors of ripe berries, elegant tannins, and a harmonious balance that reflects the unique Tuscan terroir.

Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that produce outstanding red wines. Renowned names such as GajaVietti, and Marchesi di Barolo are synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins that develop beautifully with age.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian red wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality, showcasing the island's diverse terroir.

In the Veneto region, Amarone della Valpolicella stands out as a distinctive and powerful red wine. Wineries like Allegrini, Tommasi, and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines using dried grapes, resulting in a wine with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture.

These are just a few examples of the remarkable red wines Italy has to offer. Whether you're indulging in a classic Tuscan Sangiovese, an elegant Piedmontese Nebbiolo, a bold Sicilian Nero d'Avola, or a robust Venetian Amarone, Italian red wines transport you to the sun-drenched vineyards and embody the passion, history, and artistry of Italian winemaking.

Experience the allure of Italian red wines and discover the immense variety and quality that make them a true treasure in the world of wine. Wine Advocate (95+)

This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine opens to a dark ruby color with garnet highlights. The bouquet shows a large span of wild berry, earth, licorice spice and medicinal herb aromas. This vintage also reveals a pretty floral character with dried rose potpourri and lavender buds. After fermentation, the wine is aged slowly for 30 months in large oak botte (including 10-, 30- and 50-hectoliter capacity), thus restricting oxygen and gently slowing its evolution. However, the 2015 vintage is naturally expressive and exuberant, and that's the main takeaway here.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva captivates with a rich, intoxicating bouquet that mixes deep black cherry-berry with plum sauce, balsam herbs, chalk dust and hints of camphor. It fleshes out across the palate, a staining of primary fruits and spices seeming to coat all that it touches in youthful concentration. Zesty acidity creates a refreshing balance in spite of the grippy tannins that settle in toward the close. The result is a wine of poise, structure, but also remarkable length and energy, as tart currants and salty minerals mingle – and, somehow, leave the mouth watering for more. Bravo! Argiano totally knocked it out of the park with their 2016 Riserva, which is a vineyard selection of fruit, refined for two years in 1,500-liter Garbellotto casks.

It’s silky-smooth with vividly ripe, southern Montalcino red and blue berry fruits carried across a stimulating core of juicy acidity. Sweet spice mingles with black raspberry and minerals throughout the long and lightly structured finale, as this tapers off with outstanding length yet classically poised. The 2019 Solengo seduces with its richly decadent display of vanilla and mocha-tinged dark fruits and spices, which are wonderfully lifted by minty herbal tones and white smoke. This enters the palate like weighted velvet, smooth and fleshy at first, yet lively, as mineral-tinged black currants mix with fine-grained tannins, clamping down with youthful poise. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, this tapers off incredibly long and staining, with echoes of licorice beneath an air of cedar and tobacco; yet somehow, through it all, the palate is left watering for more. It will be many years before the 2019 is ready to show its best, but it will certainly be worth the wait. The truly captivating 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni pulls you close to the glass with a beguiling bouquet that mixes citrus-tinged black fruits with exotic spices, hints of oregano, menthol and a dusting of cocoa. While there’s admirable weight and depth here, the textures are more like pure silk, delicately draped across the palate, yet leaving behind a saturating blend of intense dark fruits, minerals and fine-grained tannin. There’s so much depth and concentration to work through that, even as the 2016 finishes youthfully structured and dry, it continues to resonate for well over a minute with notes of currant, sage and dark chocolate. Bury this beautiful beast for at least 3–5 years in your cellar, and then enjoy it over the next decade or more. This is a fantastic rendition of Arnaldo Caprai’s 25 Anni.

An exotic and smoky mix of dusty dried flowers, allspice, sage and dried black cherries emerges from the hauntingly dark 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni. This is densely textural and weighty in feel, yet the balance is on point, as brisk acids maintain momentum, and a saturation of ripe red and black fruits permeate the palate. Balsam, mint, tobacco, dark chocolate and licorice can all be found through the long and utterly dramatic finale, as the 25 Anni finishes structured, yet more approachable than I’ve come to expect. Arnaldo Caprai did a great job in creating a highly successful wine in 2018; however, don’t expect it to take the usual ten years (or more) that this bottling usually does to come around.

Vinous (94)

The 2017 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine. Scorched earth, tar, licorice, black cherry and gravel give the Barolo an unusually dark, brooding profile in 2017. As it often is, the 2017 Azelia Barolo offers tremendous character and nuance in its peer group, or any peer group for that matter. Translucent and so expressive, the 2017 has a lot to offer.

The 2016 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a glorious wine. Sweet red cherry, mint, iron, rose petal and blood orange are some of the many aromas and flavors that grace this exquisite, beautifully layered Barolo. A wine of subtlety, nuance and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. I don't remember ever tasting a Bricco Fiasco with this level of finesse and nuance. Two thousand sixteen is the first vintage in which the Bricco Fiasco is aged part in cask and part in barrique. All I can say is: Wow!

The 2018 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is light, washed out and lacking in both depth and complexity. There is just not much here, sadly. Faded color and dried out fruit are impossible to look past.
