These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.
These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Holding back initially, this wine simply needs more time in bottle, and I have adjusted the drinking window accordingly. The 2019 Le Pergole Torte is a long-term proposition showing initial stirrings of tart cherry fruit, plum, licorice, tobacco and crushed stone. There is a pretty floral tone of violet or rosemary flower even now. Winemaking takes this special selection of 100% Sangiovese though cement and Allier and Slavonian oak. The balanced acidity stands out nicely. There are 29,000 bottles of the 2019 vintage, and I recommend you put yours in the cellar for five to 10 more years.Inc. GSTSG$1,028.76 -

Here is another masterpiece from vintner Martino Manetti (and winemaker Paolo Salvi, following in the footsteps of long-time key figures Giulio Gambelli and Estate Manager Bruno Bini). The Montevertine 2022 Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese made in a similar winemaking style as the others, although both botte and barrique are used here. It opens to a dark garnet appearance that is velvety and rich yet shiny on the inside with a ruby brightness that is specific to this Tuscan grape. This is an amazing wine, so precise and balanced. I love the boldness of the vintage, and I am delighted by how elegantly it unfolds over the palate. The wine is contoured and pretty in terms of texture, and yet there are mineral notes that add freshness and vertical lift. This portfolio offers good scale with three wines, an entry-level, middle-level and top-end wine, each offering a distinct identity. Production is 30,000 bottles. This wine beautifully captures the intensity and elegance of this classic vintage. The 2019 Montevertine is made with a careful selection of fruit (with 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino) from across various parcels located at a cool 400 to 550 meters in elevation. Compared to the Le Pergole Torte, which remains more closed and initially shy, the Montevertine currently soars over the senses with delicate berry and wild fruit aromas with mineral, blue flower and candied orange peel. The mouthfeel is extremely fine, but that smoothness leaves a lasting impression. Happily, there are 34,000 bottles on the market.Inc. GSTSG$919.39 -

Wine Advocate (95)
This wine celebrates 100 years of family legacy connected to Montevertine's legendary founder Sergio Manetti. The bottle shows a little logo on the front label to commemorate the anniversary. The 2018 Montevertine follows the traditional blending formula of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino that goes through a simple winemaking process that starts off in cement and continues into oak casks for 24 months. Keeping in with the well-established house style, the wine delivers enormous quality and clarity of fruit with bright cherry, rose, cassis and fragrant potting soil. These elegant results capture the promise of Sangiovese. Production is 33,000 bottles. In BondSG$720.00 -
Wine Advocate (96)
Happily, there are 34,000 bottles on the market. In BondSG$792.00 -

This is precisely structured with racy tannins that are fine, integrated and well formed. It’s medium-bodied, so long and intense. Classic personality. Cool at the finish because of a cool and late growing season. Give it three or four years to soften, but it’s very impressive now.In BondSG$551.00 -

Dark ruby-red. Vibrant but reticent aromas of dark berries, cedar, cola, mint, sweet spices and underbrush. Concentrated and fine-grained, with harmonious acidity providing lift to the oak-influenced flavors of dark berries, licorice and herbs. This Montevetrano offers early appeal but also has the capacity for a leisurely evolution in bottle. In BondSG$344.00 -

Deep purple-ruby. Rich aromas of dark plum, black currant, cedar, graphite and minerals on the captivating nose. Then clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors similar to the aromas and an extremely refined mouthfeel. Licorice and violet elements feature on the long, graceful, multilayered finish. Very promising young Montevetrano. In BondSG$182.00 -

Stunningly fresh nose of blackcurrants, blackberries and elderberries with myriad spice and herbal nuances. Breathtakingly fine tannins and great freshness packed into a sleek frame, the wine gliding over the palate gracefully as it heads out towards eternity. Delicious now, but with enormous aging potential. In BondSG$136.00 -

Aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries with licorice and black-pepper. Medium to full body. Chewy, yet refined and balance. Another two or three years of bottle age would bring it more together. Try after 2021 to soften. In BondSG$135.00 -
