Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (95-98)Ineffable, pure aromas of lemon, crushed stone and white pepper, all lifted by an ethereal suggestion of violet reminiscent of sea salt from the Camargue. Almost painfully intense on entry, then dense, full and seamless in the middle palate, with brilliant cut and lift to its palate-staining flavors of lemon, lime, powdered stone and violet. Wonderfully high-pitched, weightless wine with great class, purity and length. This is at another level of quality. One of the two or three longest wines of the vintage, and built for a glorious evolution in bottle. |

Vinous (95)It's all there in the 2009 Chablis Les Clos. White flowers, lime peel, oyster shells and petrol are some of the nuances the run through the wine. Les Clos possesses a striking inner perfume, layers of expressive fruit and a sumptuous, kaleidoscopic finish. This is a stunning effort from Raveneau. |

Vinous (94)The 2016 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has the most expressive of Raveneau’s three Grand Crus this year with scents of dried honey, pressed flowers, almond and a little wild fennel, almost Provençal-like in style. The palate is taut and crisp with fine acidity, rather linear and perhaps not quite as voluminous as I was anticipating, yet very persistent with a tang of salinity that lingers on the finish. Impressive. |

Wine Advocate (97)Serious and tensile, Raveneau's 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Clos unwinds in the glass with aromas of orange oil, white flowers, confit lemon, green apple and deftly judged reduction. Full-bodied, taut and chiseled, it's an immensely concentrated, racy wine with huge depth at the core and a long, intensely saline finish. Its style exemplifies the 2019 Chablis vintage at its best. |

Burghound (97+)A restrained nose immediately makes clear that it could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its array of mineral reduction, oyster shell, iodine, spice, floral and citrus aromas. There is once again excellent volume and intensity to the even more concentrated big-bodied flavors that deliver huge length on the bone-dry, austere and compact finish. This is presently a block of stone that is going to need at least some patience and a wine that should repay 15+ years of cellaring. Moreover, it is not only a candidate for wine of the vintage honors but could legitimately vie for being one of the all-time great examples of Raveneau Clos. I shudder to think at what price it will trade at but if you can afford it, don't hesitate. |

Vinous (96)We started with Raveneau’s 2002 Chablis Valmur, a wine I absolutely adore. Voluptuous, but still young, the 2002 is in a gorgeous place right now where time in bottle has softened some the contours and added layers of aromatic nuance. The 2002 retains considerable freshness and should continue to offer exceptional drinking for another decade-plus. Typical apricot pit, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes blossomed in a succulent Chablis of the highest level. |

Vinous (93+)The 2009 Chablis Valmur is quite closed. There is plenty of power in the glass, but not much else. Today the Valmur isn't showing much. It is the only 2009 that appears to be showing the ill effects of its recent bottling. This will be an interesting bottle to re-visit in another 6-12 months. |

Vinous (97+)Precision, nuance and translucence - not qualities typically associated with this site - are the signatures in Raveneau's 2012 Chablis Valmur. This is a decidedly understated Valmur built on restraint and a total sense of polish. The silky, resonant finish is utterly beautiful. The Valmur is another of the 2012s here that appears to be holding back much of its personality. I imagine it will offer thrilling drinking over the next two decades. |

Wine Advocate (97+)A strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage in Chablis this year, the Raveneau family's 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp green apple, citrus zest, iodine, oyster shell and fresh hazelnuts. Full-bodied, taut and chiseled, it's incredibly taut and concentrated, with huge depth at the core, tangy acids and a long, penetrating, pungently saline finish. Might this turn out to be even better than the magical 2017? Time will tell, but this is clearly a masterful achievement. |

Burghound (96)Once again there is just enough wood to mention on the green fruit, shellfish, quinine-suffused nose. The sleekly muscular, rich, powerful and serious larger-scaled flavors are unusually refined for Valmur before concluding in a driving, bone-dry and hugely long finale. This is a big but impeccably well-balanced effort that should easily repay 12 to 15 years of cellaring. In short, this is seriously good. |
