Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru hails from a small parcel just below the Marquis de Laguiche's Montrachet holdings, and it's also performing beautifully. Offering up a lovely bouquet of pear, orange oil, white flowers and clear honey that's framed by a deft touch of oak, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a deep and layered core, lively acids and a long, expansive finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Glowing primrose. Immediately a nose of majesty, more demonstrative than the Bienvenues, a substantial block of pure deep white fruit, significantly more weight and power in a chiselled white block. It really depends on what you want between these two. Time is needed to be sure that the power of the Bâtard will deliver a wine to equal the grace of the Bienvenues. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Fine pale primrose colour, a nose of both depth and elegance. A suggestion of power in restraint. The palate delivers that burst of energy in harmony with the quintessential grace of Bienvenues. The fruit is on the fresher side yet with a texture that denotes ripeness. It is very persistent, and shows its complexity through the nuances, the wavelets of fresh but ripe yellow fruit which reappear at the finish. From the domaine’s oldest vines, this is really lovely. |

Burghound (93-96)Don't Miss! An overtly floral-suffused nose features notes of lilac, carnation and acacia blossom that are trimmed in spice, citrus rind and soft wood wisps. The strikingly pure and beautifully defined larger-bodied flavors are not super-dense but I very much like the texture, all wrapped in a clean, bone-dry and compact finish that flashes plenty of focused power. This could also use a bit more depth but that shouldn't be an issue. As an aside, for those readers who were Sauzet fans 25-ish years ago, the '21 Bâtard reminds me quite a bit of the 1993, which is one of Sauzet's all-time great vintages. |

Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2012 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from grapes stationed at the top of the slope. Vinous (95+)(13.8% natural alcohol): Bright light yellow. Very sexy nose combines iodine, smoke, hazelnut and menthol. Like liquid silk in the mouth; thick but energetic, with flavors of peach, stone, truffle and menthol supported by a strong structural underpinning. The smooth, slow-building finish shows a very fresh mentholated character and a powerful impression of solidity. Deceptively open today owing to its early sweetness, and not at all austere for the cru, but I'd let this one sleep in the cellar for at least five or six years. |
