Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2010 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has compelling complexity on the nose with wonderful mineralité and terroir expression, hints of wild heather and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, impressive balance and beguiling harmony. White pepper and curry leaf pop up unexpectedly towards the graceful finish. This is a very talented 2010 with long-term potential. Tasted at the Latricières vertical at La Cabotte, London.

The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru confirms all the promise it showed from barrel, wafting from the glass with a striking nose of cassis, wild berries and plums mingled with smoke, violets, coniferous forest floor and wilted rose petals. Full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's deep and concentrated, with a deep, textural core of fruit that's underpinned by a lively spine of acidity that carries through the long, penetrating finish.

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)

The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was very impressive from barrel. In bottles, it's the real deal. Very fragrant on the nose with black cherries, raspberry coulis, hints of sous-bois and veins of blue fruit that all gain intensity with aeration. Precocious yet controlled. The palate has very pliant tannins, finely sculpted with impressive weight. Superb acidity and just a subtle twist of bitter cherry on its vivacious finish. Outstanding. Tasted at the Latricières vertical at La Cabotte, London.

Decanter (93)

This wine features a lovely bright raspberry fruit aroma with a bit of menthol and a suggestion of peony. The tannins are substantial, and there is plenty of acidity to draw the wine to a lovely conclusion. The grapes come from 60 – 65 year old vines in the lower part of Grèves where the soils are a bit deeper. The wine shows a true Grèves character in its restraint, elegance, and balance.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

Six barrels, two from Petit Musigni and four from Les 10 Journaux which is in whole bunch vinification. Two new barrels. A deepish crimson purple. The stems give an exciting lift to the wine to escape from the more muscular side. Significantly rich raspberry and cherry fruit with an excellent suavity of texture. Really well done, I am impressed. Drink from 2032-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

80 year old vines in deeper soil just below Rugiens, with deep roots which make it consistent each year. Avoided the frost. 30% whole bunch, three new barrels out of ten. A fine mid purple with some depth of fruit. The stems have done their job of lifting the bouquet, this is rather delightful, too much fruit to be called floral but there are some roses in the background too. A little firmer on the palate, and a fresh acidity to finish. Promising. Drink from 2027-2034.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)

Full red-ruby color. Cool, lively aromas of currant and tobacco. Lovely sweetness and volume in the mouth; suaver than the Beaumonts, with more flesh and perhaps lower acidity. Seamless and stylish, but with solid underlying backbone. Finishes with smooth tannins and excellent persistence. Showing well today.

Vinous (89-92)

(the yield here was just 24 hectoliters per hectare, according to Rouget) Good full red. Pure, tangy, cool aromas of raspberry, licorice and spice. Sweet, pure and lively in the mouth; shows more flesh and much better extraction than the foregoing samples. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length.

Burghound (91-94)

A ripe, expressive and airy nose that combines both upper and mid-level register fruit notes that include red pinot, black berry and violet notes trimmed in moderate wood spice as well as natural spice notes of clove and anise that can also be found on the round, rich and beautifully balanced big-bodied flavors that are powerful, long and more stylish than usual. This is a terrific Ech that should be capable of at least a decade's worth of improvement.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)

Medium red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the Beaumonts, offering scents of redcurrant, tobacco, smoky minerals and sweet oak. Silky, round and seamless on the palate, with good minerality framing the redcurrant, spice and earth flavors. The subtle mounting finish features firm, slightly edgy tannins for this cuvee in the early going.

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured entirely in new oak, has a gorgeous black cherry, raspberry coulis and mineral-infused bouquet, coiled tightly at first but unfurling with each swirl of the glass. The palate is well structured, a Grand Cru with admirable backbone. There is patently impressive depth with multi-layered red and black fruit, edging towards something more rich and dense towards the persistent finish. Emmanuel Rouget was surprised when I opined a preference for his Cros Parantoux this year, so obviously he is a big fan. And yes, this is an excellent grand cru, yet it does not possess quite the same nervosité as the Parantoux.
